As Gaurav Banerjee, Managing Director and CEO of Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), celebrates his birthday, the industry reflects on the remarkable journey of a leader who has transformed content strategy and business leadership in Indian entertainment.
Banerjee is a distinguished leader with over two decades of experience in the media and entertainment industry, responsible for steering SPNI's strategic direction, ensuring operational excellence, and maintaining its market leadership. His appointment to the top role in 2024 energized the network and brought a fresh vision to one of India's most prominent media houses.
Banerjee is one of the few media professionals who transitioned from journalism to lead a major conglomerate in the space. His media journey began as an assistant producer and anchor at Aaj Tak, before transitioning to Star News, where he produced and anchored Prime Time News shows. This foundation in storytelling would prove instrumental in shaping his approach to content creation.
He was recruited by his mentor, Uday Shankar, in 2008 to launch Star India's regional news channel business, where he established the Bengali news channel, Star Ananda. His success in regional entertainment was immediate. Within a year of its launch, Star Jalsha became the number one Bengali language channel in India.
Before joining SPNI, Banerjee wore multiple hats at Disney's India arm, including head of content for Hindi-language entertainment and Disney+ Hotstar. His strategic insight was instrumental in the platform's rapid growth, significantly increasing subscriber numbers and market share.
His strategic vision and innovative approach consistently propelled top shows like "Anupama," "Ghum Hai Kisi Ke Pyaar Mein," and "Imlie" to lead in viewership ratings. His Disney+ Hotstar commissions include Aarya, Special Ops, Criminal Justice, The Freelancer, and The Night Manager. These shows helped the platform become India's top-rated streaming service.
Banerjee holds a master's degree in filmmaking and TV production from Jamia Millia Islamia University and a bachelor's degree in history from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. This unique combination of liberal arts and technical training has informed his balanced approach to content creation: blending artistic vision with commercial viability.
Banerjee took the reins at SPNI on or before August 26, 2024, succeeding N.P. Singh, who concluded a 25-year run at the company. In this short period, he has been instrumental in driving key milestones for Sony, including a significant boost in channel viewership, securing exclusive ACC media rights (2024–2031), and bringing back iconic shows like CID to television.
Looking ahead, Banerjee also serves as chairman of BARC India and was recently announced as Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry's National Council on Media & Entertainment for 2025-26, underscoring his influence across the broader industry landscape.
As the entertainment veteran celebrates another year, the industry watches with anticipation as he continues to chart SPNI's course in an increasingly competitive and dynamic media environment. His people-centric leadership style and deep understanding of content across formats position him uniquely to navigate the challenges ahead.
