There are few figures in the history of Indian broadcasting who can claim to have been there at the very beginning and stayed long enough to see a fledgling operation grow into a multi-channel powerhouse. Kunal Dasgupta is one of them. As the media fraternity marks his birthday today, it is worth pausing to trace the arc of a career that shaped the contours of Indian television.

Dasgupta is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, one of the country's foremost management institutions, where he completed his Fellowship, a credential that would serve as the intellectual foundation for the business acumen he brought to every role thereafter. His pre-media career was substantial in its own right: he served as Vice President and CFO at VIP Industries before making the move that would define his professional legacy.

That move came in the summer of 1995. Dasgupta joined Sony Entertainment Television before its launch in July 1995, making him one of the network's very first employees. What followed was a 14-year tenure that stands as one of the longest uninterrupted runs at the helm of any major media organisation in India. He remained at the helm of Sony Entertainment Television (later rechristened Multi Screen Media) for 14 years, the longest such stint in the Indian media world.

Under his watch, the network went from a single channel with international ambitions to a comprehensive entertainment bouquet. From one channel to 14, it was made possible by the people who helped build Sony's personality over those years. Among those who came up through the organisation during this era was NP Singh, who would eventually go on to lead the network as its CEO, a lineage that speaks to the kind of leadership culture Dasgupta cultivated within the company.

The milestones of his Sony tenure read like a highlights reel of Indian television history. His network delivered Indian Idol, the highest-rated show of its time, and steadily chipped away at market leader Star Plus' dominant viewership share. He also steered the well-priced acquisition of niche channel SAB TV and added sports broadcaster Ten Sports to the cable bouquet. Each of these moves reflected a strategic mind that understood scale, differentiation, and the art of reading the Indian viewer.

When Dasgupta stepped down from Sony in February 2009, he did not step back from the industry. Instead, he turned entrepreneur. He founded Triplecom Media, where he has been serving as the Founder and CEO from 2009. The venture reflected his broader conviction in the potential of content technology, and he has continued to engage with the evolving media landscape, including an association with streaming aggregator ScreenHits TV. ScreenHits TV formed a joint venture partnership with Dasgupta and EVP Vivek Gupta to lead the platform's expansion in India, with ScreenHits TV's founder citing the pair's standing as outstanding media leaders in the region.

On his birthday today, the industry salutes a man whose fingerprints are on the architecture of Indian television as we know it: a builder, a strategist, and an institution unto himself. Many happy returns, Kunal Dasgupta.
