As Sunil Gupta turns a year older, we celebrate not just the milestones he’s achieved, but for the spirit with which he’s journeyed through life, advertising, and beyond. A name that resonates deeply within India’s advertising corridors, Gupta is more than an industry veteran. He is a keeper of memories, a master of wit, and a chronicler of culture whose legacy spans decades of storytelling—both behind the scenes and on the printed page.

His journey began in 1978 as a management trainee at JWT (then Jhanda Walan Thompson), a name that would become his professional home for the next 23 years. Rising through the ranks to become Executive Vice President, Sunil helped shape some of the agency’s most memorable campaigns, navigating brands through changing consumer moods, creative revolutions, and economic transitions. His deep involvement in the business of communication was matched only by his sharper-than-a-scalpel sense of humour and his rare ability to make sense of chaos with calm and clarity.

It was this very gift for narrative that led him, years later, to pen Living on the 'Adge' in Jhanda Walan Thompson, a candid, humorous, and deeply human memoir of his time in advertising. Far from being just a collection of war stories from boardrooms and brainstorms, the book became a cult favourite for its ability to capture the soul of an era gone by, complete with eccentric characters, office lore, and the shifting sands of India’s marketing landscape.

But Gupta didn’t stop there. His second book, Final Innings, offered reflections on his other great passion: cricket. And with his latest release, Crossed My Mind, he returns not to the boardroom, but to the ordinary and extraordinary moments of life. A collection of essays, the book is a window into the workings of a keen mind, observing, laughing, dissecting, and weaving thoughts into prose that is equal parts sharp and lyrical.

Beyond the books and campaigns, Sunil’s presence in the industry remains one of mentorship, insight, and evolution. As a managing partner at Results International LLP and an active consultant, he continues to shape strategy and thought leadership, guiding businesses with a mix of experience and instinct. His time may no longer be spent in ad agencies, but his voice continues to influence the DNA of Indian marketing.

Those who’ve worked with him speak of a man who led without noise, who inspired through trust, and who always made space for a good story. In an industry often dazzled by trends, Sunil Gupta has been a constant—steady, insightful, and unfailingly authentic.

Today, as we celebrate his birthday, we do more than look back, we look forward. Because if his journey so far is any indication, there are still many stories left to tell, many reflections still to be penned, and many minds he’s yet to cross and inspire.
