IPL season 9 has already overtaken season 8 in terms of total online conversations. RCB, Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab are the most talked about teams on the internet, according to a study by data research firm Meltwater. As per the analysis carried out by Meltwater, IPL 9 related terms saw a total of more than 4,45,000 conversations across all online platforms.
“While IPL never seizes itself from keeping away from controversies, we thought it will be good to compare this IPL season to last year’s in terms of social media involvement. It’s very encouraging to see that season 9 of IPL had more number of mentions compared to same period last year. While I would like to say that this rise in the numbers could be related to many reasons; better marketing by the organisers or may be the rising number of users on social media in India over the last one year," said Nitin Bhatia, Director of Agency Partnerships at Meltwater India.
As can be seen in the graph, Twitter remains the primary platform of choice for conversations. Also, the data suggests that IPL had a more consistent share of voice online this year as compared to last year, which would be something the individual franchises as well as the organizers of the competition would take away as a positive development.
Among the individual franchises, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) took the lion’s share of the conversations (112,920 mentions) followed by Mumbai Indians (98,000 mentions) and Kings XI Punjab (91,000 mentions). According to the India Sports Sponsorship Report 2016, jointly done by ESP Properties and SportzPower, last year’s top three talked about teams were RCB, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
"With some amazing performances by Kohli and De Villiers this season, Royal Challengers Bangalore is the most popular team on social media among the other IPL teams. While Delhi has been the oldest in the team format, but it stands last in the ranking with around 54,000 mentions since April 1, 2016,” added Bhatia.
Not only is the Delhi Daredevils team the one with the least share of voice, the Meltwater analysis suggests that it also scores the lowest in the sentiment analysis scale. On the other hand, the two new teams this year; Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions, have performed fairly well in their debut season, which could be because of the presence of star players as well as good performances by both the teams.
