The IGPL (Indian Golf Premier League) will kick off in Chandigarh from 10th to 12th September.
The IGPL is designed to create an overall impact on the golfing ecosystem and funnel rising talent into the league. It will be for the very first time that men and women golfers will be competing together on a Pro platform.
Co-Founder and legendary cricketer turned keen golfer, Yuvraj Singh is excited about the league. “Hope that golf becomes part of our culture. This will change the momentum of the game and we hope to increase confidence among the young players who will receive our full support,” says Yuvraj. His foundation YouWeCan also supports budding professional golfers.
On the anvil is a line-up of 10 tournaments that will be played across cities over the next four months. The tournaments will be played over three days with professional golfers as well as some top amateurs.
SSP Chawrasia, Indian men’s Professional golfer, is all praise for the IGPL format. “With more possibilities and access to golf today, youngsters have a chance to prove themselves and get more experience for playing outside the country as well, “says Chawrasia. The iconic golfer who is also looking forward to the Asia Tour, is happy about the increased focus at the grass root level.
Other veteran golfing legends who will be involved with the league and be seen mentoring teams, will include, Jeev Milkha Singh, Shiv Kapur, Gagandeep Singh Bhullar, Gaurav Ghei and Jyoti Randhawa.
Shiv Kapur’s advise to the young golfers – “ To structure your practise, diet, and sleep along with having a plan.”
The league will be tying up with schools and universities to develop interest and talent in the game of golf, with the support of Indian Golf Union (IGU).
CEO Uttam Singh Mundy says, “In order to capture interest of Indian audiences we will have simulators and for students there will be interactive sessions with Pros. We are confident, the golfing landscape is set to pick up pace with this endeavour.” Start-ups will also have the opportunity to buy equity in the player pool, keeping the business world engaged.
The integrated approach with a long term vision holds promise. According to General Secretary, WGAI (Women Golf Association of India) Champika Sayal, “The league is an awakening and augers well with the future encouraging more women to step onto the path and gain confidence and experience in this high visibility platform.”
