Community radio station to be soon set up in Hissar

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Government of India has signed a Grant of Permission Agreement for establishing, maintaining and operating a community radio station at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture University in Hissar, Haryana. A Letter of Intent had been issued to the Institute after recommendations of Inter Ministerial Committee and seeking requisite clearances from various Ministries.

The community radio station (CRS) is expected to be operational within three months as per the agreement. With this, the number of CRS will increase to 60 in the country.

The community radio station will be beneficial to communities surrounding suburban areas of Hissar. The objective is to reach out to the communities, particularly those who are poor, literally challenged farmers and socially culturally underprivileged people. The CRS aims to address issues that concern the community through participatory programmes and improve the quality of life in general and agricultural activities of the farmers in particular.

The Ministry encourages setting up of community radio stations as these provide an opportunity to the local communities to express themselves, share their views and particularly empower the women, youth and the marginalised groups to take part in local self governance and overall socio economic and cultural development of the area. The CRS programmes will be based on developmental, agricultural, health, educational, environmental, social welfare, community development and cultural programmes.
