Bharat Express News Network organised its first major conclave in Patna on Monday, centred around the theme “New India, with Bihar”, bringing together leading political, social and media figures ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
The event was inaugurated by Bharat Express Chairman, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief Upendra Rai, alongside Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar. Rai described the conclave as a milestone for the channel, marking its maiden mega event in Bihar since inception. He noted that Bharat Express has already deployed representatives across Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Rai also spoke about the historical and continuing importance of journalism in democracy, tracing its recognition as the “fourth pillar” back to Edmund Burke’s 1787 address to the British Parliament. He reminded the audience that the press was entrusted with monitoring the executive, legislature and judiciary, and urged a renewed commitment to responsible journalism in today’s fast-changing media environment.
Reflecting on the evolution of media, Rai highlighted the transition from print to electronic, digital, and now social media platforms. He said that while social media has empowered individuals like never before—turning every mobile phone into a newsroom—it also places a greater responsibility on users to ensure truth and balance. He cited the Manipur incident, where a Facebook post about an atrocity against women spurred national action even before mainstream media could respond.
Discussing the technological revolution, Rai stressed that innovation should ultimately simplify life and save time. Referring to tools like ChatGPT, he said digital platforms enable speed and accuracy in journalism. However, he cautioned against the misuse of technology for spreading rumours, especially in the charged atmosphere ahead of elections.
The conclave also featured deliberations with Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar on law and order, new legislations and their implications in the digital era. Several senior political leaders participated, including Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, Samrat Choudhary, CPI-ML’s Dipankar Bhattacharya, JDU’s Manish Verma, Rashtriya Lok Morcha’s Upendra Kushwaha, BJP’s Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, Cabinet Minister Dr. Ashok Choudhary, and Jan Shakti Janata Dal chief Tej Pratap Yadav.
Closing the event, Rai said Bharat Express aims to make Bihar a focal point in the national conversation on democracy and development. Addressing students, he called upon the youth to embrace the changing face of journalism and contribute towards a stronger Bihar and a stronger India.
