Bollywood star, entrepreneur, and cricket enthusiast Abhishek Bachchan received a rousing welcome in Dublin as he promoted the European T20 Premier League (ETPL), a groundbreaking franchise tournament sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Accompanied by his ETPL co-owners Priyanka Kaul and Saurav Banerjee, Bachchan’s visit to Ireland was met with overwhelming support from both the Indian diaspora and the local cricketing community. The actor was warmly received by Shri Akhilesh Mishra, the Indian Ambassador to Ireland, and Irish cricketing legend Kevin O’Brien, further strengthening the league’s connection to the European sporting landscape.
Scheduled to take place from July 15 to August 3, 2025, the European T20 Premier League aims to redefine cricket’s global presence by uniting teams from Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands. The league will debut in Dublin and Rotterdam, drawing international cricket stars and fostering a strong grassroots cricketing movement in the region.
Bachchan, who co-owns the league, described ETPL as more than just another T20 tournament, calling it a catalyst for change in cricket’s global landscape.
"The warmth and hospitality from the people of Dublin have been truly overwhelming," said Abhishek Bachchan. "This league is not just about showcasing talent but about igniting a movement that will leave an indelible mark on cricket worldwide."
Bachchan’s Dublin visit also saw significant endorsements from Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom and Cricket Ireland Chair Brian MacNeice, both of whom expressed their enthusiasm for the league’s role in expanding cricket’s European footprint.
Irish cricketing legend Kevin O'Brien also extended his support, highlighting the league’s potential to create a new generation of cricket fans in non-traditional cricketing nations.
Bachchan’s visit coincided with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, where he interacted with fans and celebrated Ireland’s rich cultural heritage. During his visit to the Indian Embassy in Dublin, Ambassador Akhilesh Mishra emphasized how the ETPL aligns with the growing presence of cricket in Ireland, particularly within the Indian diaspora, which has played a key role in the sport’s rising popularity in the country.
"The ETPL comes at a perfect time as cricket continues to gain traction in Ireland," said Ambassador Mishra. "With a strong Indian-origin community in the country, this league will further drive local interest and participation in the sport."
The ETPL follows the model of top-tier T20 leagues, with teams representing major European cities such as Dublin, Belfast, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. The tournament aims to integrate local and international talent, creating a league that is both competitive and developmental for cricket in Europe.
According to Saurav Banerjee, Co-owner of ETPL, the tournament represents a strategic step in cricket’s expansion into new markets.
"With the backing of three national cricket boards, the ETPL will transform the global cricketing landscape," said Banerjee. "This league will bring together international stars and local European talent, igniting cricket’s growth across the continent."
