Zoom, the Silicon Valley-based video-conferencing app, has beaten other messaging and video-sharing platforms to emerge as the top free app on Google Play Store’s new list.

The soaring popularity of the app is attributed to the remote working culture in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. With most employees working from home, they depend on video-calling apps to keep in touch with their superiors and colleagues.

While apps like Skype, WhatsApp and Google Hangouts also allow video-calling, Zoom is currently the only one in the market that lets more than 10 participants join the conference. Up to 50 participants can join the conversation.

Currently, it has zoomed past popular apps like WhatsApp, Google Pay, TikTok and Instagram on the Top Free App list.

As of March 27, 2020, Zoom has clocked 100,000,000+ downloads.

The app was also in the news a few days ago, it had removed the data-sharing code after reports of the platform sharing user information with Facebook, according to media reports.
