A day after Children’s Day celebrations in the country, a video of a teacher singing and dancing at a school in Kerala started doing the rounds on social media. The video, which was uploaded by an unknown person, soon became viral, with the ‘dancing teacher’ getting criticized as well as appreciated for her act.
Those criticizing the dance opined that the teacher scared the kids away and so ‘Children’s Day celebrations have been banned in Kerala next year.’ However there were people who also came out in support of the teacher for her ‘power-packed performance without stage fear and inhibitions.’
The teacher in the video is MV Usha from Kerala. Usha works with a primary school, (Trikaripur St Paul GUPS), and had performed ottamthullal- a dance and poetic performance form of Kerala- during the Children’s Day celebrations at the school. Ottamthullal is an energetic artform in which the performer himself/herself sings and explains the context/story in the performance. In the video, Usha can be seen using the artform to explain the story of Jawaharlal Nehru to kids. Co-incidentally, Nehru had likened ottamthullal to a poor man’s kathakali.
Talking about her performance, Usha, while speaking to a media site, reportedly said that she loves her students like her owns kids and she wanted to do something different and creative on the occasion of Children’s Day to make students understand more about Jawaharlal Nehru. And so she decided to use ottamthullal as a medium for it. Though not trained in the artform, Usha decided to take a chance for her kids and included information about Nehru in the performance.
Usha is not bothered about the negative comments she is receiving on the social media about her performance. She has been working as a primary teacher for the past 10 years and has been using the song & dance technique to make learning an interesting task. The only thing that bothered Usha about the whole incident was her daughter initially getting upset over the negative comments on the video. However, Usha says that her daughter’s sadness soon faded away as the video started getting positive comments.
Well, all that we can say is that the positive approach and the love for students that this teacher have make her more unique than her energetic performance.
