Twitter tributes pour in for #GauriLankeshMurder, journalists show solidarity
As Gauri Lankesh’s murder mystery kept the media fraternity on high alert, those in the industry took to Twitter to express their grief and said that such attacks won’t deter fearless journalism
The media fraternity always shows solidarity in trying times, especially when it is an attack on the fraternity itself. Be it the Charlie Hebdo shooting in Paris, J Dey’s murder or the recent murder of Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru, the industry has always raised its voice in unity.
Many journalists took to Twitter to condemn the attack on Gauri Lankesh. The voice was unanimous and it stood against such cowardly attacks.
As #GauriLankeshMurder was trending in India, this is what the media fraternity had to say on Twitter.
Barkha Dutt (@BDUTT) – “In India we bow to frauds like Ram Rahim and kill men and women of reason & inquiry like Pansare, Dabholkar, Kalburgi & now #gaurilankesh.”
Rajdeep Sardesai (@sardesairajdeep) – “Pansare, Kalburgi, Dabholkar, Lankesh, who is next? What is going on? Why haven't the guilty been caught in previous cases? #GauriLankesh.”
Rahul Kanwal (@rahulkanwal) – “Shocked by the brutal killing of renowned Karnataka journalist Gauri Lankesh. Was our guest in the last elections. Sharp political mind.”
Rajat Sharma (@RajatSharmaLive) – “Dastardly murder of senior journalist #GauriLankesh is highly deplorable. Culprits must be brought to justice in the interest of democracy.”
Shekhar Gupta (@ShekharGupta) – “Journalism is nothing without courage. Democracy is nothing without dissent. You had plenty of both #GauriLankesh You live on as inspiration.”
Sagarika Ghose (@sagarikaghose) – “Journalists, the few not bought by tycoons or stooges of govt: sing #GauriLankesh's song, work for an India based on Constitution not hatred.”
Javed Akhtar (@Javedakhtarjadu) – “Dhabolkar, Pansare, Kalburgi, and now Gauri Lankesh. If one kind of people are getting killed which kind of people are the killers.”
Journalists gathered together at the Press Club of India in New Delhi and demanded justice for Gauri Lankesh yesterday. Here in Mumbai, we spoke to a few journalists who showed strength and solidarity with the cause. The common sentiment echoed by every journalist is that such attacks can never stop them from reporting the truth.
Sanjay Singh, Resident Editor, Zee News, said, “It is a sign of weakness from those who fear transparent journalism. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Gauri Lankesh's family. This is not only an attack on her but an attack on our integrity, our sovereignty and our freedom to report fearlessly. Personally, I have always been a believer that journalism is all about being fearless and truthful and truth must prevail. We won’t stop till we are in the business and nothing can deter us.”
Rakesh Trivedi, a senior special correspondent with a leading news channel in India, said, “How mighty was her pen that they had to use bullets to silence it! May every journalist get the same courage and more power to their pens! This is definitely a cowardly act and such attacks are highly condemned and this will never deter us from reporting the truth. Her death is no less than martyrdom.”

Another Journalist, Ankur Tyagi, who works as a principal correspondent with a leading news channel, believes that these attacks show how fear can be faceless and brave hearts have the courage to face the world. He said, “It is ironic how those who fear the truth have to always hide themselves and attack from the back. We stand by Gauri Lankesh’s family and we stand together as a fraternity against such attacks. This makes us stronger.”
