- Telegram has filed a petition with the Delhi High Court challenging a government order that restricts access to its platform in India until June 22, ahead of the NEET-UG re-exam scheduled for June 21.
- The restriction, issued under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, is intended to combat cheating networks and misinformation during the examination period, following recommendations from the National Testing Agency and the Department of Higher Education.
- The NEET-UG exam was previously cancelled due to allegations of irregularities, necessitating a re-test.
- In addition to the access restriction, the government has mandated that Telegram disable its message-editing feature for previously sent messages in India until June 30 to prevent the spread of altered content; Google has reportedly removed Telegram from the Play Store in compliance, with Apple expected to follow suit.
Telegram has approached the Delhi High Court against the government’s order restricting access to its platform in India until June 22, ahead of the NEET-UG re-exam on June 21. The matter was mentioned before a bench led by Justice Tejas Karia, which allowed urgent listing on June 17.
The order, issued under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, follows recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Department of Higher Education. The government has said the restriction is aimed at preventing cheating networks, fraudulent leak claims and misinformation during the exam period.
The NEET-UG exam was cancelled following irregularities allegations, resulting in a re-test.
Authorities have also directed Telegram to disable its message-editing feature for previously sent messages in India until June 30, citing concerns over the circulation of altered or misleading content.
Reports suggest that Google has already removed Telegram from the Play Store in compliance with the order, while Apple is expected to follow.
