ICICI Bank takes lead in visitors from HDFC Bank: Vizisense

In a recent study of the online presence of the banking sector in India, audience and ad measurement firm Vizisense has revealed that ICICI is the most visited bank in India, ahead of HDFC bank. According to Vizisense, HDFC had led the category through 2010 and as late as February 2011 was still the most visited bank, but ICICI has now taken the lead.

As reported by Vizisense, the number of unique visitors to ICICI Bank online was 59.6 lakh, an increase of 16 per cent over the January 2011 figure of 49.8 lakh, over two lakh more visitors than HDFC Bank, which saw 57.1 lakh unique visitors. HDFC had seen 62.5 lakh visitors in February 2011.

According to the report, online banking as a category has grown by 41 per cent year on year in January 2011, with 1.85 crore users in March 2011, 28 per cent of the total online users. Amit Bhartiya, Business Head, Vizisense, said, “The growth of adoption of online banking solutions has matched the growth of the Internet audience. There is still a huge portion of the audience that is not using the internet for banking, but this is also growing steadily, which improvements in the internet infrastructure are also making a significant impact.”

The report also showed that while HDFC and ICICI are leading the field in online access, State Bank of India has also caught up and is closely behind the other two, particularly since October 2010 as it started to integrate the website address in its offline messaging.
Bhartiya said, “The banking sector has been taking online quite seriously and today all their messages, whether on television or in print include the website address, which has helped grow the sector.”

He added, “Our February 2011 data shows how HDFC Bank has consistently been leading within the Online Banking category. However, our March 2011 data released yesterday shows ICICI Bank overtaking HDFC Bank by 2.4 lakh monthly unique users and snatching the leadership position within this category. It’s fantastic to see both these banks compete as aggressively within the online space as much as they do offline. This however continues to have a positive impact on the adoption of online banking in India.”

The report also showed a great shift in the geographic access of online banking sites in favor of the non-metros. As per the March 2011 data, only 48 per cent of users are from metros and a huge 52 per cent come in from non-metros on banking sites. This has seen a shift from the 57 per cent users that were came in from metros just one year ago. This is also in line with the growth of the Indian internet population which has seen a larger participation from non-metros in comparison to metros.
