Here's how OTT players are covering elections

From live channels to interactive campaigns and special shows, OTT players such as VOOT, SonyLIV, ZEE5 and MX Player have elaborate plans to tap viewership during the election months

The first phase of general elections took place yesterday. The political spectacle is one of the biggest events in the country and ensures maximum eyeballs for broadcasters. News channels have already announced a plethora of shows that will help them earn advertisers’ as well as viewers’ interest.

OTT platforms too are not far behind. While VOOT has started an interactive campaign to let voters voice their opinions, SonyLIV has introduced 36+ live channels. Here’s a rundown on what OTT players are doing this election season.



Voot has introduced a campaign called ‘Janta ka time aa gaya’ with ‘Voice it on Voot’.

For news, 16 live news channels in 13 languages are available on the platform. This includes popular channels such as CNN News18, News18 India and News18 Lokmat and popular library shows such as ‘The Week that Wasn’t’, ‘Face Off’ and ‘ViewPoint’. Within a short span of time, the news category on Voot already has 5 million monthly active users. Apart from these initiatives, Voot will ensure an immersive experience for its users.

Prior to elections, VOOT had brought in interactivity during Budget, where users could predict the announcements. During the elections, the interactive tool will give India a chance to voice opinion on the important issues facing the country. Three questions are being asked from the users: ‘How satisfied are you with the current government?’, ‘According to you which is the country’s biggest issue today?’, ‘Will you vote in the upcoming General Elections?’



Apart from creating awareness regarding the candidates, ZEE5 will soon announce a marketing campaign. Taranjeet Singh, Chief Revenue Officer and Business Head - New Projects, ZEE5, India told exchange4media, “As part of our pre-election plan, we have curated content to raise awareness regarding candidates and voter queries. We will also showcase preparation campaigns of political parties along with debates and interviews of leaders and share all related updates to make sure our consumers get access to all related information on their very own personal device at their own convenience. Language-based shows will also be released for our regional viewers in Marathi & Gujarati.  

All this information will be shared on a special election page that features all of our curated collections along with LIVE channels (Republic TV, Bloomberg TV India, BloombergQuint, DD News and DD India, ZEE News (national and region-specific channels), ZEE Business, ZEE24 Taas and WION. We have a robust marketing campaign around the elections to be announced soon, he added.



SonyLIV will be introducing 36+ live news channels for the elections. The channels will be available in Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi.  The idea is to have the largest election news feed on the platform. The channels are:

IBC24, Makkal TV, India TV, NDTV India, Polimer News, Thanthi TV, Puthiya Thalaimurai,  News 7 Tamil, Public TV, TV 5 News, NTV Telugu, ABN Andhra Jyothi, V6 News, Sakshi TV, Seithigal Manorama News, Mathrubhumi News, TV 5 Kannada, People TV, Raj News 24x7, Jaya Plus HMTV T News, 10 TV, AP 24x7, CVR News Telugu, Sudarshan News, NDTV Good Times(v), Mahaa News, NDTV 24x7, NDTV Profit, Aaj Tak, India Today, Tez, Delhi Tez, Newsnation.


MX Player
