Google Labs has rolled out Mixboard, an experimental AI-driven mood board aimed at reshaping how people brainstorm and bring ideas to life. Positioned as a creative alternative to Pinterest, the platform goes beyond curation by enabling users to generate original visuals and text through generative AI.

“Mixboard is an experimental, AI-powered concept board designed to help you explore, expand and refine ideas. Visualize a vast array of possibilities, from home decor and event themes to new product ideas or your next DIY project with images and text,” Google Labs announced.

At its core, Mixboard leverages Google’s Nano Banana model, an advanced image-editing system that allows users to create unique visuals from text prompts. This marks a departure from Pinterest’s model, which primarily relies on collating existing content. Users can also upload their own photos and blend them with AI-generated graphics for more personalized boards.

The platform supports natural language editing, making it easy to refine ideas with simple commands such as “make it more minimal” or “combine these two images.” This conversational approach removes the need for professional design skills while still delivering polished results.

Another highlight is the ability to generate descriptive text based on images already placed on the board. This feature not only helps in articulating creative intent but also provides captions, labels, or short write-ups automatically. For those seeking multiple iterations, options like “regenerate” and “more like this” let users instantly experiment with alternative directions.

By merging text-based prompts with visual creation in an open canvas format, Mixboard creates a seamless workflow where words evolve into images and images inspire new ideas.

Currently available in the U.S. as a public beta, Mixboard is still in its experimental phase, but Google is optimistic about its potential to democratize AI-powered creativity.
