Sowmya Iyer, Founder & CEO of DVio Digital, remembers Atul Hegde as not just a visionary entrepreneur, but also as a trusted friend, mentor and source of constant encouragement. Reflecting on their journey from Atul’s early days at Rainmaker Ventures to building YAAP into a successful digital powerhouse, Iyer recalls his clarity of thought, conviction in his beliefs and the deep impact he had on everyone around him.

Here is what Iyer shared about Hegde:

Atul and I first met just after he had started Rainmaker Ventures, following Ignitee Digital’s exit to To The New.

Our very first conversation was over a phone call. I still remember him saying, “India produces some of the best services companies, and I’ll invest in them.” It wasn’t just something he believed—it was something he went on to prove.

He built YAAP by bringing together some of the finest talent in digital and advertising. Watching him stay true to that vision, and then seeing YAAP list just a few months ago, was incredibly inspiring. It was execution with conviction.

Through DViO’s journey, we stayed in touch. Atul was a sounding board, an advisor, and someone whose perspective I deeply valued. He was sharp, never minced words, and had the kind of clarity that comes only from years of experience--in business and in life.

Beyond work, his passion for sneakers and luxury was infectious. What started as a personal interest evolved into an Instagram channel that became my go-to for honest reviews and recommendations. I recommended it to so many people because I trusted his taste completely. He was truly one of a kind.

Atul was also one of my biggest cheerleaders. His encouragement meant more than he probably knew, and I can’t begin to express how much I will miss him.

The last time we met was at the Impact 50 event, where we happily clicked a few pictures together with the award. I didn’t know those would become memories I’d hold on to so dearly.

This is a tremendous loss for our industry, but for me, it is the loss of a dear friend.

Gone far too soon.

Rest in peace, Atul. You will be deeply missed.
