The “Pur”est of them all. Ranjan was a pure Kapur and not a Kapoor as he would gently chide those who got his spelling wrong.

Ranjan was multifaceted. An epicurean, a family man, an artist, sculptor, investor and in my book the best Business Leader of the Ad World I’ve met in my 30 years in the business.

My connection with Ranjan was also layered. Ranjan was my wife Simmi’s maternal uncle. He was also the brother of my cousin’s mother in law. We met often in family gatherings. He was the cool uncle with an even cooler father. And C42 Friends Colony his Delhi home was a happy Adda.

Then again I remember the day after I quit Star TV in 2001 I had called Ranjan home for lunch and he brought along this pony tailed Brit mallu called Andre Nair and that changed the trajectory of my professional life with GroupM and WPP.

The first thing I did when I took over GroupM was to convince him to chair our Board. In that he was instrumental in getting us the biggest value creator for GroupM employees - an employee share trust. He thought ahead of his time and was the first to implement 360 marketing at scale and exhort us to go Digital.

Ranjan was canny, wily but always fair. He had both a magnificent head and heart but I think the heart ruled. Ultimately it was his heart that failed him. But he left as he lived. With magnificence and without fuss.
