Well-known advertising professional and Chairman of WPP India, Ranjan Kapur, passed away at noon in Mumbai on Saturday. He suffered a heart attack on Saturday afternoon. Kapur was Chairman, WPP India, and former Country Manager of WPP India. He was replaced by CVL Srinivas in October 2017.

Commenting on the sudden demise of Kapur, Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO, WPP, said, "We are all in a state of shock. We can't believe it. He gave so much of his energy, time, intellect and attention to Ogilvy and then WPP. He shaped the industry in India and beyond, not only because he understood the importance of the creative idea in its broadest forms, but the management an organization needed. He also understood the geographical and technological changes taking place. He was a remarkable husband, father, leader, colleague and importantly, a gentleman. We wish his wife Jimi and family long life - all 200,000 of us."

Srinivas, who worked closely with Ranjan, said, "Ranjan Kapur was a very strong pillar of support to all of us at WPP and a friend, philosopher and guide to our entire industry. We will miss him dearly. He made a huge contribution to our industry with his outstanding leadership and always added a very warm personal touch to whatever he did. He was an institution by himself, keeping abreast of all the latest developments with childlike enthusiasm. Every interaction with him was very enriching. This is a very big loss for all of us."

Prasanth Kumar, CEO, South Asia, Mindshare APAC, the global media agency network part of WPP, also remembered Kapur as a guiding star. "Ranjan will always have a special space in our life. He has been a great mentor and advisor for all of us across these many years. He is not vanishing from our memories ever and the moments with him will always inspire us. A BIG salute to the legend and our prayers for his soul," he told exchange4media.

With over four decades of service in advertising, Kapur started his career with Citibank and served long stints in senior positions at Ogilvy & Mather India Private Limited (O&M) before retiring in 2003. Kapur was honoured with the Industry's Lifetime Achievement Award from AAAI in 2008 for his contribution to the advertising industry.
