Prasoon Joshi's appointment as CBFC chief brings cheer to the ad and film industry

Joshi was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2015 for his contributions towards the field of Arts, Literature and Advertising

The appointment of Prasoon Joshi, CEO, India and Chairman (Asia Pacific) of McCann Worldgroup, as the new Chairperson of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is being seen as a welcome move.

Joshi replaced filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani, who was appointed as CBFC Chairman in 2015. During his tenure as the CBFC Chief, Nihalani courted controversy for often his views on censorship. He was criticized for muzzling the creative expression that cinema espouses.

Commenting on the appointment of Joshi as the new CBFC Chief, Sandeep Goyal, Chairman, Mogae Media, said, “Prasoon is an excellent choice as Censor Board Chairman. He brings maturity and gravitas to the job. Prasoon has close of 30 years of experience in handling brands, both big and small. He understands critical dimensions of all communication, with balance and equanimity. He himself is a celebrated lyricist. A practitioner. His dispensation, I am sure, will be even handed and just. Prasoon Joshi is a young man with a mature mind, a well-rounded outlook and loads of good quality exposure. The government has made a good choice.”

With Post Joshi’s appointment, the CBFC has also set up a new board that includes Gautami Tadimalla, Narendra Kohli, Naresh Chandra Lal, Neil Herbert Nongkynrih, Vivek Agnihotri, Waman Kendre, Vidya Balan, TS Nagabharana, Ramesh Patange, Vani Tripati Tikoo, Jeevitha Rajasekhar and Mihir Bhuta.

Stating that the decision to appoint Joshi as the CBFC head will once again usher in an era of liberal ethos, Avinash Pandey, COO, ABP News, said, “Smiriti ji is a very dynamic minister and lawmaker that we have. By appointing Prasoon Joshi as CBFC Chief, she has once again displayed that. Prasoon who is an accomplished advertising professional, an international celebrity, a business person and a prolific lyricist was much needed to ensure a liberal and modern approach in the entire process of film certification. As an advertising and media person, I am very happy with this move and the entire media community must be thankful to the minister.”

For Pradeep Guha, CEO, 9X Media, Joshi is the right choice for heading the censor board. “He will be a sensible person on the censor board. The advertising industry is very happy that someone from our industry has gone there. He has had a rich and successful association with the film industry.”

Joshi is known for his award-winning ad campaigns and is also as an acclaimed scriptwriter and lyricist. He was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2015 for his contributions towards the field of Arts, Literature and Advertising.

“I am looking forward to seeing Prasoon Joshi as the new head of CBFC. I think he is a voice that we can all relate to and I think all the grouse we had with Pahlaj Nihalani should be resolved with this appointment,” added filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar.

Joshi’s former colleagues too foresee a new era for the censor board with his appointment as Chairman of CBFC. Manish Bhatt, Founder Director at Scarecrow Communications Ltd, who has worked with Joshi on various projects, said, “I have worked with Prasoon on a couple of projects and he is a man of great knowledge. I’m sure his stint at CBFC will see the dawn of a new era.”
