KV Sridhar becomes a member of AAP; more adlanders to follow suit?

KV Sridhar, Chief Creative Officer, Leo Burnett India and Sub-Continent has shared that he has joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) “to support honesty in politics”. He is one of the latest names from the media and advertising fraternity to join the party. Earlier, Ashutosh, former Managing Editor of IBN7, formally joined AAP on January 11, 2014.
When quizzed on what triggered this decision, Sridhar said, “I want to clarify that this just a personal act and has nothing to do with my company or group I work with.The arrogance of the current politicians, especially triggered by recent events in Uttar Pradesh, it is difficult to see the leaders who are callous towards normal people and their suffering.”
AAP undoubtedly seems to be a draw for not only the masses, but the media fraternity as well. In October 2013, media entrepreneur and former CEO of Star TV, Sameer Nair, joined AAP and supported the party’s Delhi Assembly elections campaign.
Nair, who has been following AAP since its launch, joined the party as “he wanted to contribute in the change that AAP is trying to bring in Indian politics”, according to an earlier statement issued by the party.
IBN7’s Ashutosh is not the first journalist to join AAP, the other media personnel who have the joined the party include Manish Sisodia, who recently took charge as the Education Minister of Delhi, and Shazia Ilmi.
What attracts people to AAP is that its identity as well as its promise has a connect with the common man. While for most the party also stands for the anti-corruption movement, AAP has ensured that it differentiated from other parties since its inception.
What also seems to working for AAP is that it is an active part of people’s everyday life, including social media, with a Facebook page which has over 10 lakh Likes and active current conversations, besides being popular on Twitter as well.
It will be interesting to see if more people from the communication fraternity join AAP. Priti Nair, Founder, Curry Nation felt that more and more advertising people will join the party. “Not just advertising people, I think a lot of professionals from different industries will join AAP, which seems to finally to bring for the educated class an option of a party that will do something. Otherwise every time you are caught between the devil and deep sea, and frankly, vote with no real choice or conviction .This time it will be different. As far as I am concerned, I would do the same thing eventually. I like their views. I like the intensity and honesty with which Arvind Kejriwal speaks,” she added.
Sridhar asked, “Aren’t we part of the country? We all possess the power to influence minds and it will be a waste if we do not use it for ourselves. You are called as an individual only if you have an opinion or point of view. We all have our opinions and it would be a shame if we bury them inside. After all, I would rather encourage a young party to fail and learn than fail myself by being a mute spectator.”
The AAP effect has certainly prompted people to join what was typically reffered as ‘dirty politics’ in support of Kejriwal and in the hope of bringing about a long overdue change.
