In a new campaign blending celebrity presence with playful storytelling, Google has teamed up with Sourav Ganguly and Bare Bones Collective to launch ‘Gangoogly.’ Set against the backdrop of India’s cricket fandom, the ad uses humor, nostalgia, and digital interaction to engage audiences around Google Search.

The ‘Gangoogly’ ad featuring Sourav Ganguly, conceptualised by Bare Bones Collective for Google, is a clever and nostalgic tribute to cricket culture, playfully integrating Google’s search feature within a lighthearted, meme-friendly narrative. What stands out is its effortless blend of cricket nostalgia with today’s digital culture, rooted in authenticity yet alive with contemporary humor.

As Girish Narayandass, Co-Founder of Bare Bones Collective, pointed out, the ease and naturalism on screen were a direct result of fostering a fun, collaborative atmosphere on set. Ganguly’s innate charisma and the natural chemistry between cricketing legends like Sehwag, Kumble, and Kaif translated into a playful and effortless performance. This conscious decision to prioritize fun over over-direction made the ad’s humor feel genuine rather than scripted.

Swati Dua, the agency’s other Co-Founder, emphasized the importance of aligning the campaign with Google’s brand values without over-relying on trends. Instead of leaning on easy internet gimmicks, they rooted the campaign in authentic storytelling, cleverly using cricket nostalgia as a backdrop while keeping the tone fresh, current, and true to the product. The nostalgia wasn’t an indulgence, but a vehicle for fresh digital storytelling.

The biggest challenge, as Girish explained, was maintaining tonal balance in a multi-character, potentially chaotic setup. This was deftly handled at the scripting stage, where the team centered the story around Ganguly’s playful obsession with googlies, keeping the narrative progression logical and emotionally consistent. The premise evolved naturally, allowing each cricketer’s cameo to land with clarity and humor, avoiding the cluttered feel often seen in multi-celebrity ads.

A particularly smart creative risk was casting Ganguly, primarily known as a batsman and captain, as a googly-throwing prankster. As the agency clarified, the ad wasn’t about real googlies but about playful, exaggerated ones. This surprising premise added charm and humor, making the ad accessible to both cricket enthusiasts and casual audiences.

While it was early to measure audience-wide feedback during the interview, Bare Bones noted unanimously positive reactions from both the brand team and the cricketers involved. The collaborative spirit on set, fueled by the talent’s enthusiasm for the script and concept, contributed significantly to the ad’s warmth and relatability.

This campaign also reflects the evolving advertising landscape where bold, meme-friendly narratives coexist with authentic storytelling. Both co-founders acknowledged a growing openness in the industry towards daring, unconventional ideas. As Girish remarked, "good ideas need good supporting clients," and with Google’s collaborative approach, this one flourished.

In reflecting on the broader industry, the founders observed that while younger agencies bring adaptability and fresh digital sensibilities, legacy agencies still hold invaluable mastery over craft and storytelling fundamentals. The sweet spot lies in balancing these, holding steadfast to creative fundamentals while adapting them seamlessly for new platforms and audiences.

‘Gangoogly’ is a textbook example of contemporary advertising done right, nostalgic without being dated, humorous without gimmicks, and digital without losing emotional warmth. It showcases Bare Bones Collective’s nimble creative thinking, rooted in strong craft and clear storytelling.
