Delhi HC rejects Nimbus’ plea on cricket series

The Delhi High Court has refused to grant Nimbus’ request to restrain Tata Sky and Dish TV from broadcasting live the ongoing India-Bangladesh cricket series.

The Delhi High Court is believed to have refused to grant a stay to the two direct-to-home operators, and ruled that transmitting Doordarshan, which is also telecasting the matches, was not a violation of copyright. According to Tata Sky’s counsel, the DTH licence mandates the carriage of Prasar Bharati channels on the most profitable terms. Nimbus refused to comment on the matter. The next hearing is scheduled for May 21.

The controversy over private broadcaster Nimbus sharing live cricket feed with Doordarshan seems to have settled for now. The Nimbus-owned Neo Sports is providing a clean feed of the India-Bangladesh cricket series to DD without the logo of Neo Sports or commercials.

Early this year, Nimbus had opposed the compulsory sharing of signals with Prasar Bharati, which runs Doordarshan. The government had replied by introducing the Sports Broadcasting Signals (mandatory sharing with Prasar Bharti) Ordinance 2007.
