Her early life & entry into the communications industry
Talking about how she first came across the communications industry, Arpana states that her journey into communications was designed beautifully and not accidental. “Growing up as the youngest of three sisters in an Air Force family, I was constantly on the move—new cities, new schools, new faces. Each move was a lesson in adaptability, teaching me how to connect with people from all walks of life and find common ground,” she continues.
She thanks and mentions her elder sisters as her role models who were acing in the fields of advertising and marketing. Just like them, she also wanted to carve her own niche. That’s when while flipping through their well-thumbed copy of Philip Kotler’s Marketing Management, she came across PR. It intrigued her as a field where creativity, strategy, and relationships intersected—something distinctly different from what my sisters were pursuing. It was her way to step out of her sisters’ shadows while drawing inspiration from their journeys. She also thanks her parents for being influential and helping shape her perspective. With this foundation, she then pursued a postgraduate programme at XIC, where she was fortunate to learn under the mentorship of Jane Swamy that solidified her understanding of communications as both an art and a science.
“My first job in Mumbai, at a small agency, was a baptism by fire. The pace was relentless, but it was there that I truly grasped the power of clear, impactful messaging. Each role since has reinforced my belief that communications is not just about disseminating information—it’s about influencing, inspiring, and creating meaningful change,” she elaborates.
She admits that choosing communications was one of the best decisions of her life as it allowed her to combine her love for storytelling, passion for connection, and the lessons she learned from her family into a career that continues to be deeply fulfilling.
Her three decades of experience with leading organisations
Defining her three decades of career in communications and her experience working at leading companies like Britannica India, Weber Shandwick, PR Pundit, Shell, and others, Arpana highlights that her career has been a journey of constant learning, adaptability, and meaningful impact. Each organisation she has worked with has been a unique chapter in this journey, shaping her perspective and growth.
She says, “Britannica India instilled in me the value of precision and credibility. Working with a brand synonymous with knowledge, I learned the importance of delivering messages that were not only accurate but also deeply trustworthy, while navigating the delicate balance between heritage and innovation in communication strategies.”
Next, she mentions, “PR Pundit was my laboratory for creative experimentation and growth. It offered a front-row seat to the rapidly evolving media landscape in India. The fast-paced environment demanded agility and creativity, reinforcing the need to stay ahead of trends while never losing sight of authenticity.”
Then, “Weber Shandwick introduced me to the dynamic world of an international network consultancy. It gave me a deep understanding of navigating complex crises while driving alignment across global and local priorities. This phase of my career also taught me the art of collaboration across cultures and geographies,” she mentions.
“At Shell, I experienced the full spectrum of communications—from crisis management to shaping global narratives. Leading communications through transformative times taught me how to balance the consistency of global frameworks with the nuances of local storytelling. Shell also deepened my commitment to embedding diversity, inclusion, and sustainability into communication strategies,” she explains.
“Currently, at Jindal Steel, I am focused on positioning the brand as The Steel of India—a symbol of innovation, resilience, and nation-building. By blending the company’s rich heritage with forward-looking aspirations, I aim to create an emotional connection that resonates with a dynamic, young India,” she explains about her experience at Jindal Steel.
Lastly, she acknowledges that each of these roles have added layers to her understanding of the industry, equipping her with the tools to navigate complexity while staying grounded in empathy and clarity.
Her contributions as first India Chapter Co-Chair for the Asia-Pacific Association of Communication Directors
Talking about her key goals, and impact she created through this role, she emphasises, “When I took on this role, my vision was to create a platform for communication professionals in India to share best practices, learn from global peers, and build a stronger network. My key goals included fostering collaboration, elevating the strategic role of communications, and highlighting India’s unique contributions to the global communications landscape.”
Then COVID happened and during that period when people were not only grappling with professional uncertainties but also personal struggles, the platform became more than just a space for professional connections—it evolved into a source of support and solidarity. She mentions that it provided a space where individuals could find allies, share their experiences, and offer encouragement during difficult times.
“We also initiated dialogues on emerging trends, from digital transformation to sustainability communications, and provided a forum for exchanging ideas. It was gratifying to see the community grow and thrive, with professionals finding value in collective learning and shared experiences,” Arpana adds, stating the impact created through the platform.
Her contributions to other social causes
Arpana is a great advocate of diversity and inclusion, supporting women and LGBTQ+ resource groups at Shell. “Diversity and inclusion are deeply personal to me. At Shell, I was privileged to champion initiatives that created safe, supportive spaces for women and LGBTQ+ colleagues. We launched programmes that addressed unconscious bias, encouraged allyship, and celebrated diverse voices,” she says.
She shares one of the most rewarding aspects of her journey was mentoring women leaders and seeing them break barriers. For this, she collaborated with employee resource groups to ensure their initiatives were not just symbolic but led to tangible cultural change.
Her contributions through mentorship
Mentorship is a cause close to her heart. “Whether it’s through structured programs like Ashoka’s Livelihoods Impact Accelerator, Promise Foundation’s Mentor Venture, or informal one-on-one interactions, I aim to provide guidance that’s both practical and empathetic,” she briefs.
Arpana focuses on helping social entrepreneurs articulate their vision compellingly, enabling them to attract support and scale their impact effectively. “For young professionals, I encourage self-awareness, continuous learning, and resilience. I often remind them that communication is as much about listening as it is about speaking—and that authenticity is their greatest asset,” she concludes.
Lesser-known facts about her journey
Arpana shares a lesser-known aspect of her professional journey and reveals that she has a deep connection to the arts, culture, and civil society space. She adds that earlier in her career, she conducted strategic communications training and coaching for prestigious organizations such as DFID, UN Women, and Breakthrough. “I’ve had the privilege of working as an advisor to Start Up! Since 2012, serving as a strategic communications coach for their teams and initiatives such as the E3 Incubator for businesses run by persons with disabilities, the Ashoka Livelihoods Accelerator, and the Omega Resilience Awards,” she adds.
One of the most defining moments in her journey was during a workshop for the Ashoka Livelihoods Accelerator. “A grassroots leader shared how storytelling gave her the confidence to connect with policymakers and funders for the first time. Seeing how communication could empower her to amplify her impact was a humbling reminder of the transformative power of our craft,” she underscores.
As a faculty member at ArtsThink South Asia (ATSA), the first arts management program for cultural entrepreneurs, she has played an important role in shaping the next generation of cultural leaders. “It has the power to bridge gaps, inspire change, and create meaningful transformations, whether in a corporate boardroom or a rural community hall,” she emphasises, reaffirming that storytelling lies at the core of meaningful impact.
Her five principles of success
Arpana distils her career insights into five key principles, that she would pass on to aspiring professionals in the communications field,
- Stay Curious, Stay Ahead! - The key to thriving in the ever-changing world of communications is a mindset of constant learning and adaptability.
- Listen First, Impact Later - Great communication begins with understanding—tune in to truly connect.
- Authenticity: Your Superpower - In a crowded world, being real isn’t just refreshing—it’s what builds trust.
- Relationships Are Your Real ROI - Success isn’t just about results; it’s about the connections that make them possible.
- Change Is the New Constant - See challenges not as hurdles, but as stepping stones to growth.”
Her future plans
Highlighting the next steps in her journey after dedicating close to three decades to this industry, she asserts, “As I lead brand and communications for Jindal Steel, my focus is on crafting a narrative that reflects the company’s role as The Steel of India—a catalyst for nation-building, sustainability, and innovation. This role is deeply fulfilling, as it allows me to shape a brand story that resonates with pride and purpose.”
Arpana also talks about her next steps beyond the workplace and says that she will focus on paying it forward. “Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to be guided by numerous mentors and leaders who have shaped my journey. Their wisdom and support have been invaluable, and I am committed to mentoring the next generation of communicators. I want to help them navigate this dynamic field with purpose, confidence, and a clear sense of impact,” she explains.
“I also look forward to contributing to causes that align with my values, whether through social impact initiatives, sustainability efforts, or by helping others find their own path in communications. The journey ahead is full of promise, and I’m eager to embrace new challenges and opportunities that allow me to continue growing both professionally and personally, and to create lasting impact,” she concludes.
