Women have played a huge role in shaping the communications industry, even if their stories haven't always been at front. The industry has several remarkable women whose talent shape our world, often blending empathy with innovation in ways that make communication more real, more inclusive, and more powerful for everyone.

In this Women Achievers series, we honour and celebrate the achievements and innovation of an emerging comms professional, Rishu Singh, Associate General Manager, Corporate Communications, Fortis Healthcare, who is shaping the industry’s narrative, driving meaningful change, and creating positive impact. She was bestowed with the ‘Emerging Leader in Corp Comm’ award at the 5th edition of e4m PR & Corp Comm Women Achievers' Awards 2024.

Excerpts:

How has been your journey in the communications industry, share your experiences and challenges as a woman leader.

My journey in the communications industry has been both enriching and transformative. With over 17 years of experience, I have had the privilege to witness how communications has evolved, from traditional PR methods to digital-first, always-on strategies we rely on today.

As a woman leader in this space, the path hasn't always been linear. There were moments when I had to push twice as hard to be heard or taken seriously. But those very challenges became my motivation. They shaped my leadership style being empathetic, resilient and solution-oriented.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been the opportunity to mentor and support other young professionals, particularly women entering this industry. I believe that communications is not just about crafting narratives for brands—it's about amplifying voices, creating impact and driving change. That ethos has been at the core of my work at Fortis Healthcare, where effective communication directly influences trust, care and credibility in the healthcare space.

-What shifts and transformations have you observed for women in the workplace over the last few decades, and what do you think still needs improvement?

Over the past few decades, the workplace has undergone a remarkable transformation for women. We've moved from being a minority presence in corporate corridors to becoming key decision-makers, boardroom contributors, and sectoral leaders. There’s a stronger recognition today of the value women bring, not just in terms of skill and productivity, but also in shaping empathetic, inclusive, and forward-looking cultures.

In the communications industry specifically, women have always had a strong presence, but what’s changed is the growing number stepping into leadership roles. There's now more intentionality around diversity, better policies on flexibility, maternity support.

There are still challenges to overcome in the industry - the pressure to do it all, and the constant juggling act of work-life balance—but with each passing year, the tide is turning. Women are being recognized for their leadership in new ways, and I’m excited to be a part of that change. My journey has taught me that while the road can be difficult, the power of perseverance, community and authenticity is invaluable.

-What are the most important skills and qualities that women leaders need to succeed in the PR and comms industry?

The PR and communications industry is dynamic, fast-paced, and constantly evolving—making it both a challenging and rewarding space for women leaders. To truly succeed, there are a few core skills and qualities that I believe are non-negotiable.

First and foremost is strategic thinking. While storytelling is at the heart of communications, it must be backed by insight, data, and a clear understanding of business objectives. Women leaders who can align communication goals with organizational vision bring immense value to the table.

Emotional intelligence is another key strength. The ability to listen, empathize, and build authentic relationships—be it with media, stakeholders, or internal teams—can significantly amplify impact. In today’s world, where trust is paramount, this skill truly sets leaders apart.

Adaptability is crucial. The communications landscape is being reshaped by technology, social media, and changing audience behavior. Women leaders who stay curious, embrace change, and are willing to learn and unlearn continuously will always stay ahead.

Additionally, resilience and assertiveness are essential. There will be moments of crisis, pushback, or being underestimated. Navigating these with confidence, calmness, and clarity defines great leadership.

Lastly, mentorship and collaboration matter. As women leaders, lifting others while we climb not only strengthens the industry but also creates lasting impact.

-What suggestions would you give to companies who want to attract and retain more women in leadership positions?

Attracting and retaining women in leadership is not just about representation—it’s about building cultures that support, empower, and nurture talent at every stage.

Start with creating a strong pipeline. This means investing in mentorship, sponsorship, and leadership development programs tailored for women. Identify high-potential talent early and provide them with clear growth pathways, exposure to strategic roles, and the confidence to lead.

Equally important is flexibility. Women often juggle multiple responsibilities, especially during key career-building years. Policies that support work-life balance—such as hybrid work models, parental leave for both genders, and return-to-work programs—can go a long way in retaining talent.

At Fortis Healthcare, we’ve seen firsthand how diverse leadership enhances collaboration, innovation, and impact—especially in a sector as human-centric as healthcare. The goal should always be to create ecosystems where women don’t just rise—they thrive.

-What advice would you offer to young women who are starting their careers in the communications industry?

My first piece of advice is to believe in your voice. In communications, your ability to craft narratives, shape perceptions, and build trust is incredibly powerful. Never underestimate the value you bring to the table, no matter how early you are in your journey.

Secondly, be curious and keep learning. This industry evolves rapidly—with new platforms, technologies, and audience behaviors emerging all the time. Stay updated, ask questions, take feedback in stride, and don’t hesitate to step out of your comfort zone.

Build your network and seek mentors. Strong professional relationships can open doors, offer guidance, and help you navigate challenges with more confidence. Surround yourself with people who inspire and push you to grow.

Resilience is key. There will be long days, last-minute crises, and moments when things don’t go as planned. Use those as learning experiences. Stay calm under pressure, and remember that every challenge you overcome adds to your strength.

And finally, stay true to your values. In a field where perception often meets reality, authenticity will always set you apart. Let integrity, empathy, and purpose guide your work—and success will follow.

-Lastly, how do you feel as a winner of the 5th edition e4m PR & Corp Comm Women Achievers Awards 2024?

It’s truly an honour to be recognized as a winner at the 5th edition of the e4m PR & Corp Comm Women Achievers Awards 2024. This recognition is not just a personal milestone—it’s a reflection of the collective effort, passion, and resilience that defines the work we do in communications.

Receiving this award reinforces the belief that authenticity, purpose-driven storytelling, and strategic thinking can create real impact—especially in a sector like healthcare, where trust and clarity are paramount. I’m deeply grateful to Exchange4media for creating a platform that celebrates women leaders who are shaping the future of our industry.

This moment is also a reminder of the many women—past and present—who have broken barriers and paved the way for others to rise. I accept this recognition with immense gratitude, and also as a responsibility - to continue mentoring, supporting, and empowering the next generation of communicators.
