Beginning of his journey in the communications industry

Bhavani's communications career began with an intense passion for connecting brands and ideas. To gain the skills to make this career a reality, she earned a PG Diploma in Public Relations and Mass Communication in 1990. “The art and science of communication have always fascinated me, and in the early stages of my career, I found myself in roles that required engaging with multiple stakeholders. This experience nurtured my growing interest in corporate communications and marketing,” she underscores.

Her career path shifted when she became the General Manager—Marketing Communications at a renowned coffee chain in Chennai. In that moment, she realised her true calling for the profession. She attributes her professional growth to the invaluable guidance and mentorship she received from senior professionals and mentors along the way. She shares that a key lesson she learnt in her early agency days was the importance of innovation and quotes, “One idea a day keeps your client engaged.”

“Working with renowned agencies like Ogilvy PR and IPAN provided me with invaluable exposure to world-class brands across diverse sectors. These experiences challenged me to think beyond conventional strategies, overcome communication barriers, and develop creative, out-of-the-box solutions,” she explains, sharing about her experiences that strengthened her career’s foundation.

Key takeaways from her professional experience

Bhavani’s career includes stints with numerous renowned organisations like Ogilvy & Mather, GE Industrial, and IPAN Hill & Knowlton.

“At Ogilvy & Mather, I gained a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling and creativity in brand-building while mastering 360-degree communications. My time at GE (General Electric) reinforced the importance of precision, process-driven communication, and adherence to global standards, where my role encompassed both internal and external communications. At IPAN Hill & Knowlton, I honed the art of strategic thinking and stakeholder engagement alongside advocacy communications, working with clients across diverse industries,” Bhavani explains, highlighting the learning from her diverse roles.

She acknowledges that these experiences provided her with a well-rounded understanding of the industry and underscored the importance of adaptability, innovative problem-solving, and outcome-driven campaign strategies. “A key skill I developed early in my career—and one that I have since mastered—is crisis communication. Managing crises is as much about people as it is about messaging and timing. Understanding how to navigate high-pressure situations, manage narratives, and deliver the right message at the right moment has become one of my strongest professional assets,” she asserts.

Her efforts for women's empowerment

Being a woman leader herself, she has first-hand witnessed the transformation of women in leadership within the communications sphere. To this, she reminisces, “When I began my career, leadership roles for women were far less common, and breaking through required persistence, resilience, and a need to prove oneself repeatedly.” However, today, she believes in a more inclusive landscape where women lead with confidence, shaping strategy and driving meaningful change. “However, challenges like work-life balance and gender bias remain—and I have enough personal experiences from my early and mid-career to fill an entire book one day!” she highlights.

She says that PR has always been a welcoming profession to women due to its natural ability to communicate, build relationships, and navigate complex narratives. She then explains, “At Footprint, I take immense pride in creating opportunities for young women who are eager to push boundaries, unlock their full potential, and carve their own leadership paths. Seeing them thrive and break through barriers is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work.” Seeking mentorship from the other inspiring women leaders has been a rewarding part of her journey, and she strives to create similar opportunities for the next generation of women in PR.

Inception of Footprint Global Communications

“My inspiration to establish Footprint Global Communications stemmed from a deep belief that impactful communication has the power to drive meaningful change in society and communities. Communication is not just about disseminating information—it’s about creating awareness, shifting perspectives, influencing decisions, and ultimately shaping a better world. The philosophy that defines Footprint's motto is "Communicate; Make an Impression,” Bhavani elaborates, sharing her vision and inspiration behind starting her firm.

Bhavani acknowledges that building Footprint was both an exciting and challenging journey. For her, one of the first hurdles was assembling multi-talented and result-driven team members who shared their vision.

She further mentions that their unwavering commitment to purpose-driven communication is what sets Footprint apart. “We specialise in areas that have far-reaching social impact—public health, gender, reproductive health and rights, and higher education. These are not just industries to us; they are causes that demand compelling narratives, stakeholder engagement, and well-structured advocacy. Our approach goes beyond conventional PR—we blend strategic storytelling with research-driven insights to craft narratives that bridge the gap between information and action,” she elucidates.

From driving awareness about life-saving vaccines and advocating for policy changes in reproductive rights to amplifying the voice of institutions shaping future generations to achieve the nation's goal of Viksit Bharat 2047, she is creating a tangible difference and inspiring action through different campaigns, partnerships, and initiatives.

Her efforts to address the communication gap in public health and climate change

Bhavani’s focus on advocacy communication stems from a deep sense of responsibility to address pressing challenges using communication as a strategy and tool. In areas like public health and climate change, effective communication can be the bridge between ground breaking research and real-world impact. Working with clients in the public health domain has been incredibly rewarding, as it has allowed us to promote initiatives that save lives, improve health outcomes, and influence public policy. Similarly, in climate change advocacy, our campaigns aim to inspire both individual and collective action, translating research into meaningful engagement.

She shares that one of our most impactful initiatives has been raising awareness about non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and advocating for urgent policy shifts. By crafting compelling narratives around scientific data, they have helped bring attention to critical health issues, ensuring that research findings reach not just policymakers but also the communities that stand to benefit the most. Another impactful campaign she and her team led focused on generating awareness and dispelling myths around an indigenous vaccine designed to combat diarrhoeal deaths among Indian children under five. By addressing misinformation and building public trust in this life-saving intervention, they played a role in ensuring that more children received the protection they needed.

A campaign especially close to her heart is her work in promoting reproductive health, empowering women with informed choices, and advocating for safe abortion practices in India. “Reproductive rights are fundamental to women's well-being and autonomy, yet they remain a topic shrouded in stigma and misinformation. Through strategic storytelling, community engagement, and collaboration with healthcare experts, we have worked to create a more open and supportive dialogue around these critical issues, ensuring that women have access to accurate information and safe healthcare options,” she illustrates.

In the domain of climate change, our work with IITs, particularly IIT Madras and IIT Guwahati, on science communication has provided us with the opportunity to amplify cutting-edge research on sustainability, renewable energy, and green mobility,” she emphasises, highlighting her work to bring action in climate change.

“At Footprint, we bridge this gap by translating complex climate research into accessible, action-orientated communication. This involves working closely with researchers to distil key insights, developing compelling narratives, and leveraging multiple communication channels—mainstream media, digital platforms, policy briefs, and stakeholder engagement initiatives,” she explains.

One of the biggest communication gaps Bhavani saw in public health and climate advocacy was the disconnect between scientific research and public understanding. “Often, highly technical findings fail to resonate because they aren’t communicated in relatable, actionable ways. Our goal is to simplify messages without losing their essence, using storytelling, visual communication, and partnerships to drive awareness and engagement. By ensuring that research doesn’t remain confined to academic journals but reaches policymakers, businesses, and communities, we play a vital role in turning knowledge into action,” she asserts.

Factors that contributed to her success

Consistency, curiosity, and adaptability have been the key factors that contributed to Bhavani’s success over the years. “I prioritise lifelong learning, staying updated with industry trends, and maintaining strong professional relationships. Setting aside time for reflection from my setbacks helps me stay grounded and focused,” she illustrates.

Other than this, she believes in leading from the front, taking ownership and always staying on top of things at work—being proactive, detail-orientated and ensuring that nothing slips through the cracks. “Being available to clients when required, especially during a crisis, is non-negotiable, as trust and responsiveness define strong client relationships,” she asserts.

Next, she supports creativity and says that it fuels innovation, and she makes it a practice to think up new ideas—one idea a day keeps the momentum going and opens doors to fresh opportunities. “While having a Plan B is essential, my approach is always to make Plan A work with persistence and strategic execution. Ultimately, success comes from a combination of vision, agility, and an unwavering commitment to delivering excellence,” she guides.

Things that excite her about work and the future of the industry

Bhavani mentions that the ever-evolving nature of the industry and the new opportunities to learn and innovate excite her. She also talked about the increasing integration of technology, from AI to data analytics, and the way it is revolutionising how professionals connect and engage and measure impact for the clients. “What excites me most is the potential to leverage these tools to create even more personalised, impactful, and inclusive narratives. As the industry continues to prioritise purpose-driven communication, I see immense opportunities to contribute to meaningful change. Learning is a never-ending process, and that excites me the most,” she adds.
