2018 has been a year of experiments, spinoffs and new genres for television. And no wonder then that the tussle for the top slot in the rating chart has been quite interesting this year. As you get ready to close 2018, we take you through the top 10 shows of the year across Hindi general entertainment channels.

As per the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data of Week 1-50 (HSM Urban +2 and Prime time Original airings considered), Naagin3 ruled the TRP charts this year and grabbed the first position in the list of Top 10 shows with 9.3 million average impressions.

Another show that has topped the chart for the year is Kundali Bhagya. Zee TV’s prime-time drama stood at the second spot recording 7.3 million average impressions throughout the year.  Launched on June 2, Colors’ new dance reality show Dance Deewane was another big hit on television. The show stood at number three with 6.9 million average impressions.

On the fourth spot is Zee TV’s another drama series Kumkum Bhagya. The show got 6.6 million average impressions. Kumkum Bhagya was followed by Star Plus’ longest running show Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on the fifth spot with 6.1 million average impressions. Sony TV’ Super Dancer Chapter 2 grabbed the sixth spot with 5.9 million impressions and Sab TV’s Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma bagged the seventh spot with 5.8 million impressions.

The eighth spot has been taken by Sony TV’s Kaun Banega Crorepati with 5.7 million average impressions. At the ninth spot is Star Plus’ new offering Kulfi Kumar Bajewala, which registered 5.6 million average  impressions. The 10th postion has been taken by Radhakrishn with 5.5 million impressions.

Talking about the successful run of Naagin3, Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Head of Hindi and Kids TV Network, Viacom18, told exchange4media, “Naagin’s Season 3 has been our best season so far. The show opened with 4.3 TRP, which is huge. It has done beautifully well for us. Along with that, Dance Deewane too performed well for us. It was a new format that we tried.”

Elated over the popularity of their shows, Aparna Bhosle, Zee TV Business Head, says that Kundali Bhagya has proven to be a roaring success and has maintained its leadership position ever since its launch. “Kumkum Bhagya maintained its top position along with its spin-off Kundali Bhagya. This year, Kumkum Bhagya not only took a leap of seven years but also celebrated the 1000-episodes milestone.”

She further added, “The channel maintained a consistent leadership in weekday primetime (across quarters this year), led by a steady growth of fiction performance. We have enjoyed leadership slot all through FY 19 YTD across 9pm with Kumkum Bhagya and 9:30 pm with Kundali Bhagya, the top two weekday fiction shows across Hindi GECs. Our primetime fiction shows showcase, amongst other things, the empowerment of the modern Indian woman who is at par with her male counterpart, has a mind of her own, a point of view and the strength to assert herself and stand up for what she holds true.”
