Sony is officially partnering with the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 (WCH Tokyo 25), scheduled for 13-21 September, 2025, at the Japan National Stadium. The collaboration aims to enhance the 20th edition of the WCH through technology, creative support, and social initiatives.
Sony's technology will be used for news coverage and production, including its Alpha mirrorless cameras, G Master lenses, and portable data transmitters. Moreover, as part of the World Athletics Media Academy, Sony will also host a workshop for 11 emerging photographers, giving them hands-on training and on-track access.
Hawk-Eye Innovations, a Sony group company, will provide officiating support with its video replay system and share verified footage and graphics with broadcasters.
To support media professionals, Sony will set up a Camera Service Booth at the Media Centre, offering access to approximately 150 cameras and 600 lenses, along with on-site engineering and support. In collaboration with Project KIBO, piloted by Kazuo Hirai, former Sony CEO, the company will invite children and their guardians to the stadium for a sports photography and running workshop on the track.
A special exhibition, “World Athletics Moments: More Than Meets The Eye,” will be held at the Sony Store in Tokyo’s Ginza from 5 - 22 September, featuring photography and a motion-tracking experience. Visitors at the stadium can also try out Sony's Alpha series and E-mount lenses at an on-site booth.
The World Athletics Championships are a major biennial event organized by World Athletics. Formerly known as the ‘IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Championships,’ this competition is considered the top international event for track and field, marathon, and race walking, on par with the Olympic Games.
