The Press Club of India has strongly condemned the high-handedness of the Delhi Police in detaining the reporter and cameraperson of the popular channel Lallantop and snatching their camera, microphone and mobiles, when they were covering a protest by students against alleged irregularities in the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruitment examination on Sunday.
In a statement issued on August 25, 2025, the Press Club of India said, “The reporter and the cameraperson were manhandled and forcibly picked up by the police personnel at the protest site in Ramlila Maidan even when they repeatedly told them that they were media persons. The police personnel also snatched their identity cards when they showed it. After this, the two were pushed and shoved into the police vans which were carrying the arrested protestors”.
“When the Lallantop office called up the reporter, a policeman, who had the mobile in his custody, himself told them that the reporter and the cameraperson had been detained and were being taken to the lock-up. This led the channel officials to call up senior police officials, following which the two were let off and asked to get down the police van midway. This instance not only reflects the high-handedness and misuse of power by the Delhi Police personnel, but it is also used by them as a tactic to disallow journalists from carrying out their duty, disrupting their coverage by snatching their tools of work and detaining them. The PCI denounces such acts of the police and calls upon all working journalists and fraternal organisations to protest.”, the statement said.
