The Press Club of India (PCI) has strongly condemned the FIR filed by Himachal Pradesh Police against journalist Sanjeev Sharma, calling it an attempt to suppress freedom of expression.
The case emerged after Sharma shared on his social media a Facebook post by the son of a road accident victim, which questioned the police’s delayed response and alleged negligence. Shimla Police accused Sharma of spreading misinformation and damaging the image of the force.
In a statement issued by PCI President Gautam Lahiri, the club said Sharma had merely highlighted the concerns of the victim’s family, which is part of a journalist’s duty. The PCI described the FIR as a worrying trend for democracy, stressing that in a democratic system, journalists are expected to hold those in power accountable.
The club urged Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to immediately revoke the FIR and sensitize the police about the functioning of the media.
