Parade, premieres and women ruled television this Republic day
As India celebrated its 68th Republic day yesterday, broadcasters had varied offerings lined up for viewers, from movie marathons to special shows revolving around eminent historical figures and also documentary films
Yesterday, Doordarshan proudly celebrated India’s 68th Republic Day by showcasing the parade where not only the military might of the country was seen in its full glory but also had 17 states and Union Territories presenting the varied historical, art and cultural heritage of the country. Other broadcasters had varied offerings lined up for viewers on the National Holiday, from movie marathons to special shows revolving around eminent historical figures and also documentary films.
Movie premieres on Hindi GECs
GECs cashed in on the Republic Day holiday by treating their viewers with Bollywood movie premieres from 2016. Ace cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s biopic ‘M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’ premiered on Star Plus at 1pm. Whereas &pictures presented the courtroom saga Rustom, starring Akshay Kumar and Ileana D Cruz, at 8 pm. Karan Johar’s directorial venture ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ was on Colors at 12 pm.
On the other hand Sony SAB channel played out an episode in ‘Chidiya Ghar’ evoking patriotic feelings.
Patriotic line up on Hindi movie channels
Sony Max’s line- up included a mix of patriotic, comedy and dubbed films such as ‘Tiranga’ and ‘Chak De India’, the channel also entertained its viewers with a mixed bag of movies such as ‘3 Idiots’ and South Indian dubbed superhit, ‘Tadakha’, ‘Kundan’, ‘Zakhmon Ka Hisaab’ and ‘Khal- Naaika’.
English channels’ action fiesta
Movies Now telecast a special property for Republic Day called Badge of Courage from 9am onwards, which included movies like ‘Man of Steel’, ‘The Expendables 3’, ‘Spectre’, ‘Air Force One’ and ‘300.’ Times Network’s other movie channels MN+ AND Movies Now 2 simulcast the satellite premiere of ‘Goodkill’ at 1pm and 9pm.
Sony Pix and Sony LePlex also celebrated Republic Day with a line-up of movies. While the former showcased ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2’, ‘Two Brothers’, ‘The Fast & The Furious’, ‘Johnny English’ and ‘Mr Bean’, Sony Le Plex HD had ‘The Walk’, ‘Straight Outta Compton’, ‘Casper’, ‘The Sweetest Thing’ and ‘Daddy Day Care’ as part of its programming for the day.
Steven Spielberg’s animation film, ‘The BFG’ premiered on Zee Studio at 1pm and 9pm yesterday.
Comedy Central played the marathon of ‘Outsourced’ from 10am onwards.
Women first at CNN-News18
Apart from covering the Republic Day parade live, news channel CNN-News18 launched a campaign called #RepublicForWomen where the channel conducted a social experiment by sending a team of journalists and volunteers undercover on the streets of major cities like Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR and Mumbai. The experiment was telecast on the same channel under the name #RepublicForWomen at 10.30pm. It also showcased another special episode called ‘Republic Day Special Episode of Off Centre with Retired Lt. General DS Hooda’ at 10pm where the army veteran shared his views on surgical strikes, militant camps and social media usage by soldiers.
Infotainment channel History TV18 showcased a series of documentaries on eminent personalities and others the entire day like ‘Gandhi’, ‘The Birth of Empire: The East India Company’, ‘BR Ambedkar,’ ‘Taj Mahal’ and ‘Between Gandhi and Hitler.’ The channel also presented interesting facts about the country with the show ‘Vital Stats of India.’
Music channels’ patriotism fervour
Mastiii played patriotic songs throughout the day. Bollywood music channel, 9XM, started celebrating Republic Day from January 25 with a special property called Constitution of Music featuring ‘constitutional’ principles of music drafted by their popular comic characters Bade and Chote. 9X Jalwa, India’s popular channel for classic hits, played patriotic numbers with special indents and Republic Day graphics featured in between.
