Onam 2018: Malayalam channels make the best of festive sentiments

A look at what channels of Mathrubhumi, Aisanet, Amrita, Flowers and Mazhavil Manorama have planned this Onam season to keep viewers glued to their TV screens

Onam is just around the corner and Malayalees across the globe are all prepared to welcome the harvest festival of Kerala. With the festive sentiments at an all-time high, the television world in Kerala is leaving no stone unturned to entertain viewers with various special programs for Onam.

“To keep pace with the changing tastes of our viewers, irrespective of age, Amrita Television is coming with innovative shows this Onam, which will be a sumptuous feast for global Malayalees,” said Siva Kumar R, Business Head, Amrita Television.

Amrita TV is broadcasting the Mohanlal-Atham movie festival from August 15 to August 23. The movies include 1971 Beyond Borders, Hello, Peruchazhi, Irupatham Noottandu, Lokpal, Mr Fraud. Amrita TV’s key highlight for the Thiruvonam day is the telecast of the Pranav-Mohanlal starrer Aadi. The channel will also telecast the 100-day-celebration event of Aadi on August 19 and premiere movies such as Angamali Diaries, Velipadinte Pustakam and Ezra. The channel is also coming up with a special musical chat show with legendary music director Arjunan Master this Onam season. Apart from this, it has lined-up a chat show with youth stars of the Malayalam film industry, including internet sensation Priya Prakash Varrier.

Asianet is planning for special programming line-ups starting this week including eight world television premieres, special programs, and special events. The premieres include Aravindante Athidhikal, Sudani From Nigeria, Street Light, Captain, Kuttanpillayude Sivarathri, Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil, Poomaram and Mersal.

Other highlights are their flagship non-fiction program Bigg Boss hosted by Mohanlal, special events- Anand TV Award, North American Film Awards and Onam specific special shows- Ona Upperi, Ponnona Kalavara and Ona Ruchimelam

Speaking to exchange4media, Reghu Ramachandran, Senior Vice President, Asianet Communications, stated, “For the last 25 years Asianet is celebrating Onam with Malayalees across the world. To make it much bigger this year we have planned special programs, events, eight film premieres, which would be a real visual treat for our viewers.”

A new player in Malayalam GEC space, Flowers TV is also set to woo viewers during the festive season. They have lined up movies including Avarude Raavukal, Kadha Paranja Kadha, Anegan, Pagadi Aattam, Raavan.

An interesting program named Oru Russian Apaaratha, a survival show including humour, fun, and real incidents, is scheduled for 10 days from Atham to Thiruvonam day on Flowers TV. Ramesh Pisharody and Dharmajan will be part of this show. The show will culminate in Moscow where they get tickets to celebrate Onam with their family, if they complete the journey successfully.

A travelogue named Kulu Manaliyil Chackochanum Midhunum will be telecast from Atham to Thiruvonam on Flowers TV. In this program Malayalam film actors, Kunchacko Boban and Mithun will be travelling to Kullu Manali using local means and celebrate Onam with Malayalee communities based there.

Other programs on the new channel include Stars in Ghost House, Katturumbu- Chat show, Comedy Utsavam, Guiness World Record Live, Celebrity Boat Race, cookery shows named Onam Pachakamela, Onam Payasamela and an interview with Nivin Pauly to name a few.

Mathrubhumi Television has scheduled interviews with various film celebrities and musicians during the festive season. They will telecast around five Onam food shows and five eminent music directors are coming on screen as part of Onam programs.

Talking to exchange4media on the viewership during Onam, MV Shreyams Kumar, Joint Managing Director, Mathrubhumi Group, said, “The viewership is normally on the higher side as there is a high inflow of NRIs who come to their native towns for celebrating the festival with friends and family. Onam in Kerala is Christmas, Eid and Diwali all rolled into one. The festival is normally a week-long celebration and most of the offices are closed during this time, which results in people either spending more time watching TV or even going out shopping.”

Mazhavil Manorama, with the launch of Mazhavil Digital Premiere First, has reached a new milestone. The channel started telecasting premiere of Malayalam blockbuster movies on their digital platform mazhavilmanorama.com even before it was aired on linear television. The movie line up for Onam festive season include Queen, Parole, Panchavarna Thatha, Masterpiece, Chanakyathanthram, Kalyanam, Viswavikyatharaya Payyanmar, Velaikkaran.
Other programs include Thakarppan Comedy Mimicry Mahamela, Onnum Onnum Moonu Season 3. There will also be Onam special episodes for ongoing shows such as Thakarppan Comedy, Super 4 and Nayika Nayakan. The channel will also telecast Mazhavil Mango Music Awards, one of Kerala's biggest music award shows, during Onam.

“The line-up apart from eight big movies include Mazhavil Mango Music Awards, special Onam shows, cookery special Atham Pathu Ruchi, Onam special episodes of music reality series Super 4, Chat show Onnum Onnum Moonu and much more,” said PR Satheesh, COO, MMTV.
