When Rahul Kanwal walked into the NDTV newsroom as its new CEO and Editor-in-Chief this week it wasn't just a new leader taking charge, it was the beginning of a recalibration. A network once hailed as the gold standard in Indian broadcast journalism is now on the cusp of a high-voltage reinvention, and Kanwal seems like the man born for the job.
Known for his combative interviews, fearless reportage and sharp editorial instincts, Kanwal brings more than two decades of journalistic experience and strategic foresight to NDTV at a time when the media industry is undergoing tectonic shifts—technologically, politically, and commercially. Rahul Kanwal has all the right skills , experience , aptitude , attitude and the drive to grow NDTV network both as an editorial product and as a profitable business.
The Legacy He Inherits
NDTV has long stood as a bastion of liberal journalism in India, a network synonymous with credibility, nuance and a certain old-school integrity. But it’s also a brand that, in recent years, seemed to struggle with its digital positioning, viewer engagement and relevance among younger audiences.
“I grew up watching NDTV,” he said recently, “and I understand the emotional connect that millions of Indians have with this brand. I want to respect that legacy while pushing NDTV to speak in a language the next generation understands.”
Kanwal is no stranger to transformation. At India Today, he was instrumental in overhauling the network’s prime-time programming and redefining its digital-first strategies. Shows like Newstrack and Jab We Met reintroduced a more immersive and personality-driven form of political storytelling, with Kanwal himself evolving from a traditional anchor to a multimedia news brand.
Colleagues describe him as fiercely competitive, obsessed with editorial quality, and deeply attuned to shifts in audience behavior. That mix of newsroom muscle and boardroom strategy is exactly what NDTV now needs.
Rahul Kanwal has the right understanding and has learnt from the best in the business at India Today group having worked directly with Mr Aroon Purie and Ms Kalli Purie and that too over a long period of time in all formats.
Rahul Kanwal truly understands all formats of content starting in TV, then digital and also leading print. He has led news operations and understands input and is a great manager having led teams and has nurtured talent in his earlier leadership role in the India Today Group.
Rahul understands news and news gathering from the grounds up and enjoys doing content in all formats. He has also curated , created and led event formats which have become so integral to all the stakeholders in a media business.
Rahul Kanwal is a hard core news person who also relies on research and understands the 24 by 7 nature of news in all formats. He also has a screen presence which helps in engaging with all stakeholders both externally and internally.
At India Today Group as part of his leadership of Business Today, Rahul also cut his teeth in business which primes him up for his current larger role. He was also instrumental in taking up anti fake news fact checking and tools in his last role. Kanwal also understands the power of Data Intelligence and also the power of Open Source Intelligence.
Bringing Back Grit to the Newsroom
If sources within the company are to be believed, Kanwal has already begun understanding things ,getting into details, reassessing editorial beats, recalibrating digital video strategy and asking tough questions about the relevance of existing programming. There’s a renewed emphasis on investigative journalism, mobile-first content and restoring NDTV’s image as a “thinking person’s news channel,” but now with platform agility.
His obsession with editorial credibility is well-known. He has often said that a newsroom’s integrity must be “non-negotiable,” but he also believes storytelling must evolve with time: “Trust is earned not just by being right, but by being relatable and real,” he remarked during a recent closed-door editorial meeting.
CEO Who Still Thinks Like an Editor
What sets Kanwal apart from many in the media leadership space is that he doesn’t see the editor and the executive as oppositional roles. His vision blends the two. He isn’t just talking P&Ls or programming slates; he’s deeply invested in audience metrics, newsroom culture and ethical reporting.
Having trained in investigative journalism at Cardiff University and executive leadership at Harvard Business School, he comes equipped with the kind of hybrid mindset today’s media leaders require, nimble with numbers but grounded in narrative.
What NDTV Stands to Gain
With AMG Media Networks backing the next chapter of NDTV, there’s capital and intent. But what Kanwal brings is urgency, an impatience with mediocrity, a flair for disruption and a journalist’s heart still beating beneath the CEO’s jacket. If NDTV’s earlier identity was defined by calm authority, Kanwal may well bring a new dimension: energetic credibility.
His arrival could mean the end of the “lukewarm liberalism” some critics accused NDTV of, and the beginning of a sharper, more confident editorial positioning, backed by strong tech infrastructure and a more digitally native newsroom.
The Stakes Are High, But So Is the Belief
Rahul Kanwal’s challenge isn’t small. He has to balance legacy with innovation, journalistic integrity with platform demands and a skeptical media audience with a fractured attention span. But if his career so far is anything to go by, he is not here to play it safe.
Rahul Kanwal has all the right attributes , skills, temperament , drive and acumen for this big role & dual role at NDTV. The viewers and the industry are watching. In the last two years NDTV was steadied by Sanjay Pugalia and its business leaders . The Business and revenue teams have created new IP s and formats and monetised them and Rahul Kanwal s leadership will build on and accelerate on the positive attributes and good talent that exists in NDTV. However there is a possibility and anticipation that Rahul Kanwal may bring more business talent and even some new editorial talent to supplement what exists at NDTV. The Human Resources head of NDTV Purva Misra who joined NDTV and AMG 9 months back has been headhunting the right business and editorial leaders for NDTV and Rahul Kanwal s appointment was received very well by the industry as it holds the promise of re calibrating NDTV.
There have been notable examples in the past of editorial leaders successfully transitioning into business leadership — Uday Shankar, for instance, rose from editorial roles to become one of the most influential figures in the media and entertainment industry.
More recently, Gaurav Banerjee made a similar move, shifting from his role as President of Hindi and English Entertainment at Star Disney to become the MD and CEO of Sony India, a development that bodes well for the company. Here's wishing Rahul the very best on his journey—may he achieve great success and leave a lasting impact in this next chapter of his career.
