Hyderabad-based Kapil Group to foray into television space with 24-hour news channel

The channel is expected to go on air by the end of December 2008. The Kapil Group has appointed K Ramachandra Murthy, a veteran journalist with over 40 years of experience in journalism, as MD of the new venture. Murthy will also hold additional charge as CEO and Editor-in-Chief of HMTV. Prior to joining HMTV, Murthy was the editor of various Telugu dailies, including Andhra Jyothi, Vaartha and the now defunct Udhayam.
Speaking to exchange4media, Murthy said, “We have a dream of launching a 24-hour news channel, which would be followed by more channels, besides an English daily and a Telugu daily. We want to build a media house in a big way with a bouquet of channels and newspapers.”
Other key appointments include M Kishore, who has joined as General Manager - Marketing. He moves from Big FM Hyderabad. Mallepalli Laxmaiah, a well-known columnist and Dalit activist, has been appointed as Chief of News Network, while Ram Mohan has been brought in as Editor - Output. Ram Mohan had earlier worked with ETV and Gemini News, prior to joining HMTV. Both Laxmaiah and Mohan have over 10 years’ experience in the field.
According to Murthy, the advertising pie of the Telugu news channels was about Rs 22-23 crore, which was being shared by the existing news channels. There are about five Telugu news and current affairs channels present in the market – ETV2, TV9, TV5, NTV and Gemini News – while a few more news channels are in the pipeline. In the coming days, the Telugu news genre is expected to witness tough completion with more players entering the fray.
