Uday Kumar Varma, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) is retiring on June 30, 2013. Friday, June 28 is his last working day at the Ministry.
Varma joined as the MIB Secretary on October 20, 2011. In his tenure of one year and nine months at the Ministry, he led from the front to pan out digitisation in four metros and 38 cities in two phases.
Commenting about his tenure as the MIB Secretary, Varma said, “My tenure in the Ministry has been successful and productive. I am proud to be associated with the digitisation initiative of the Government, which has seen analogue cable TV become digital addressable in the three metros and 38 towns having a million plus population. It was a gigantic task, a challenge which was successfully accomplished with the help of all stakeholders, most importantly, with the cooperation of consumers, who willing and warmly accepted digitisation. Digitisation will bring about a revolution in the broadcasting sector. While some of the gains are evident and visible right away, the full impact will be felt in a time span of 2-5 years. I hope by then India will have a broadcasting sector that is not only strong and vibrant and growing rapidly, but also very transparent and consumer centric. It may hopefully offer a unique model of efficiency and convergence that many countries will like to emulate.”
