Barely a few hours before his sudden demise Gautam Siddharth (50,) senior editor, The Times of India (TOI), sent his last message to a colleague asking to count on him for any help. A thorough gentleman, loved and respected by one and all in the TOI family and the industry, died of a sudden cardiac arrest on Thursday noon at the TOI Delhi office at Bahadurshah Zafar Marg.
Siddharth’s sudden death, has come as a big shock to the TOI family. Speaking to e4m, Vikas Singh, deputy executive editor, TOI said, “Siddharth was a thorough professional and a gentleman. He was respected and deeply loved by his colleagues. He was always helpful and willing to go that extra mile.”
Siddharth was one of the key senior members of the Times News Network team. Singh said Siddharth was not suffering from any known health issues. “In fact, a few months ago, in preparation for turning 51 on February 14, he had made some significant lifestyle changes and had lost five kgs of weight,” said Singh.
On Thursday noon, just before the usual news meetings around 12:00 pm, Siddharth tapped on his colleague’s shoulder asking him to come for the meeting. On his way, he went to the loo from where came a sudden noise of a thud and his colleagues rushed there to find him collapsed. The in-house doctor was called and within the next five minutes he was rushed to the G B Pant hospital which is across the road from the TOI office. He was declared dead on arrival.
Social media was abuzz with the news of his sudden demise. Shocked colleagues and well-wishers took to Twitter expressing their condolences. "At The Times of India, Gautam was my go-to editor. I always showed him a draft of what I wrote. He would make corrections, carry out improvements. He was an irreplaceable friend, colleague. He was only 50. He will be missed by all of us," wrote Avijit Ghosh in his article for TOI which he penned down to pay a tribute to the Senior Editor.
Another colleague, Manimugdha Sharma wrote: My senior colleague Gautam Siddharth passed away this morning after suffering a massive heart attack in office. We have lost a dear colleague and the paper has lost a good editor. He will be missed. May he be at peace, wherever he goes.
