Sonal Kalra turns 50. For those who have followed her journey through the pages of newspapers, columns and books, it’s not just a birthday, it’s a moment to celebrate a life devoted to the written word, a career shaped by clarity of thought, depth of empathy and an unwavering commitment to journalistic excellence.

Kalra is not merely a well known editor or a columnist. She is a storyteller and a cultural observer. Over the years, she has built an extraordinary connection with readers through a mix of wit, wisdom and quiet conviction.

Sonal’s academic roots are as distinguished as her career. She earned her Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi. Graduating with a gold medal, she entered the newsroom not just with a degree, but with purpose. That academic rigour became her editorial backbone, a quiet force behind her consistent excellence in the field.

She served NIC in the government of India’s Ministry of Communications in the key role of Editor Informatics - heading information dissemination about e-governance and ICT policy making. It was not long before she joined Hindustan Times.

In 2008, Kalra launched her now-iconic weekly column, A Calmer You, in HT City. At a time when the world was growing louder and more anxious, Sonal offered her readers something rare: a pause. Through deeply personal yet universally relatable reflections, she taught her audience how to cope with stress, find humour in daily life, and anchor themselves amid emotional storms.

The column struck such a chord, leading to a bestselling trilogy of books that carried her voice into bookstores, bedside tables and personal journeys. The books-A Calmer You, More of a Calmer You and Some More of a Calmer You, did not simply compile her writings; they extended her philosophy of self-awareness and emotional intelligence in an increasingly frantic world.

Today, Sonal Kalra serves as the Chief Managing Editor of Entertainment and Lifestyle at HT Media, overseeing 28 editions of the newspaper’s feature supplements, including HT City. Her leadership in this role is not simply administrative; it is editorially transformative. She has reimagined lifestyle journalism as something more than soft content. In her hands, it becomes commentary, storytelling and subtle cultural critique.

Her editorial judgment reflects a balance between mass appeal and meaningful engagement. Under her guidance, HT City has become more dynamic, inclusive and thoughtful in its storytelling. She brought a new perspective to features and celebrity interviews, steering coverage that doesn’t just report what happened, but explores why it matters.

One of Sonal’s standout contributions has been the celebrated HT Power Couples series. Her interviews with iconic duos like Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan and Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor offered readers rare glimpses into lives often hidden behind the glamour. The emotional tone of these interviews was distinctly hers—empathetic, curious and never invasive. She brought depth to stories others only skimmed.

Her writing never needed sensationalism. She trusted the reader’s intelligence, and more importantly, the subject’s humanity. That trust is what has defined her style—and elevated her brand of journalism.

Kalra’s work has earned her some of the highest recognitions in Indian journalism, including the prestigious Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Film Journalism. She has also received the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Award for her contributions to media and the United Nations Cultural Relations Media Award, among others.

What sets her apart is her influence—not just in headlines or bylines, but in how readers feel after reading her work. She doesn’t just inform; she inspires, mentors, and, in many ways, heals. Her writing gives readers permission to feel, reflect, and slow down.

As she celebrates 50, Kalra stands at the peak of a career that continues to evolve. She is not resting on past successes; she is still asking better questions, telling deeper stories and lifting the quality of discourse in Indian media. Whether editing national editions, moderating panels, speaking at forums or penning her thoughts late at night, she remains what she has always been, a writer in the truest sense.
