  • Kamal Haasan celebrates his 72nd birthday on November 7, prompting fans to reflect on his significant contributions to cinema, including films like Nayakan, Moondram Pirai, Indian, and Vikram.
  • For five decades, Haasan maintained a strict boundary between his artistic work and commercial endorsements, refusing to engage in advertising despite lucrative offers.
  • In 2015, he broke this pattern by becoming the face of Pothys, a textile retail brand, reportedly earning between ₹10 crore and ₹16 crore for the campaign, which he allegedly did not keep.
  • The revenue from the Pothys campaign was claimed to be directed towards NGOs for children affected by HIV/AIDS, though this was later disputed by a co-founder of the trust associated with Haasan, who requested clarification on the matter.

As Kamal Haasan celebrates his 72nd birthday today (November 7), millions of fans are revisiting his towering cinematic legacy. From the tragic brilliance of Nayakan and Moondram Pirai to the vigilante justice of Indian and the recent box-office juggernaut Vikram, his equity on the silver screen is undisputed. But for brand marketers and advertising executives, the ‘Ulaganayagan’ or ‘Universal Hero’ presents an entirely different, and perhaps more fascinating, case study.

In an era where a celebrity’s valuation is aggressively monetised through Instagram reels, FMCG endorsements, and micro-video campaigns, Kamal Haasan did the unthinkable: for the first five decades of his illustrious career, he refused to sell anything.

For 50 years, Haasan's philosophy was rooted in a distinct boundary between artistic expression and commercial hawking. Brands waved blank cheques at him, yet his commercial portfolio remained resolutely empty. He cultivated a brand powered entirely by calculated scarcity.

In September 2015, Haasan made a historic foray into television commercials, signing as the face of the Chennai-based textile retail giant, Pothys.

The mandate was monumental, not just for its novelty but for its sheer commercial weight. For stepping in front of the camera to ask Tamilians what made them proud to wear Pothys silk, Haasan was reportedly paid a staggering fee ranging between ₹10 crore and ₹16 crore for the single campaign.

Allegedly, Haasan didn't keep a single rupee. The revenue generated from this historic ad deal was directed towards NGOs dedicated to helping children affected by HIV/AIDS.

However, Rajeev Nambiar, who co-founded the trust along with Kamal Haasan, quashed the reports as rumors and requested everyone to stop spreading it. “Kamal Haasan is a trustee of the Petrathan Pillaiya Trust (PTP Trust). The Trust has always enjoyed his guidance & advice. Some of you have read tweets regarding a donation by Kamal Haasan to the Petralthan Pillaiya Trust ( PTP Trust). This is false. Spreading this info gives false hope to our children. Please share and retweet this msg. Please avoid spreading inaccurate information,” said Rajesh told Kollywood reporter.

Years before the Pothys campaign, Haasan had gone on record to state that if he ever decided to act in commercials, the financial windfall would be used exclusively for the benefit of HIV positive children. In one calculated move, he successfully converted 50 years of untapped brand equity into a massive philanthropic revenue stream.

At 72, he represents a rare celebrity command: one whose endorsement carries unparalleled gravity precisely because it cannot be easily bought.
