On his birthday, Shashwat Goenka finds himself firmly positioned at the centre of one of India’s most diversified business groups, with a role that has steadily expanded over the years. As Vice Chairman of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, Goenka today is not just part of the next generation of leadership, but among those actively shaping the group’s direction across sectors.
His journey within the group has been gradual and operationally driven. Having joined over a decade ago, Goenka spent significant time understanding the business from the ground up, particularly in retail. His long association with Spencer's Retail, where he served as Sector Head, came at a time when the business was navigating a rapidly evolving consumer market. The focus during this phase was on improving efficiencies, strengthening the store network and aligning the brand with changing customer expectations in an increasingly competitive retail environment.
Alongside this, Goenka also pushed into building new consumer-facing businesses. As the founder of Guiltfree Industries Limited, he led the launch of Too Yumm!, a snack brand that entered the market with a clear positioning around better-for-you consumption. The bet on healthier snacking came early, and over time, the category has seen significant traction, placing the brand within a fast-growing segment of India’s FMCG market.
Beyond the group’s operating businesses, Goenka’s role has widened at the board level. He currently holds positions across several key companies within the group ecosystem, including CESC Limited and Firstsource Solutions, reflecting his involvement in sectors ranging from power and infrastructure to IT-enabled services. This cross-sector exposure has become central to his role as the group continues to balance legacy businesses with new growth areas.
Goenka is also actively engaged with industry bodies, where he holds leadership and advisory positions. His association with FICCI and CII includes roles in young leadership forums and national councils, placing him within broader industry conversations around policy, growth and sectoral development. He has also held positions such as the youngest President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and currently serves as Deputy Chairman of the CII Eastern Regional Council.
In 2024, he was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, a recognition that brings together business and public leaders expected to contribute to global dialogues on economic and social issues. The recognition comes at a time when Indian business leaders are increasingly participating in international platforms.
An alumnus of the Wharton School, Goenka combines global academic exposure with a career that has been largely built within the group. He also serves as the Honorary Consul of Finland in Kolkata, adding a diplomatic dimension to his portfolio.
As he marks another year, Goenka’s journey reflects a leadership approach that has focused on continuity as much as change. With responsibilities spanning multiple sectors and a growing presence in industry forums, his role within the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group is expected to remain central as the conglomerate looks at its next phase of growth.
