As Ashish Shelar marks his 54th birthday on October 3, his journey offers a portrait of a public figure whose career spans neighbourhood politics, legislative responsibility and sports administration. For the senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Bandra has remained a defining connection through his rise in Maharashtra’s public life.
Born on October 3, 1972, Shelar grew up in Mumbai and completed his schooling in Bandra. His early involvement in social and cultural activities helped draw him towards public engagement. A lawyer by training, he subsequently built his political career through organisational work, developing the experience that would underpin his electoral and administrative roles.
His progression through the BJP’s youth wing placed him at the centre of party organisation and outreach. He served in the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 2012 to 2014 before securing a significant Assembly breakthrough in 2014, winning Bandra West against Congress leader Baba Siddique. He retained the constituency in 2019 and 2024, completing three successive Assembly victories.
Those milestones reflect a sustained political presence in a constituency known for its diverse communities. Within the BJP, his leadership of the Mumbai unit also gave him a wider organisational role, bringing together constituency work, party building and the demands of urban politics.
Alongside his legislative career, Shelar has maintained an active association with sports administration. Elected vice-president of the Mumbai Cricket Association in June 2015, he went on to become treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in October 2022. His involvement with the Mumbai District Football Association added another dimension to a career extending beyond the Assembly.
His current responsibilities as Maharashtra’s minister for electronics, information technology, artificial intelligence development and cultural affairs bring technology and the creative sector into the same public portfolio. In August 2026, he was also elected president of the Esports Games Federation, extending his sporting engagement into a growing digital field.
At the federation, Shelar has outlined the need for a more structured and professional ecosystem, with opportunities for skills, training and employment. The appointment adds a contemporary chapter to his longstanding involvement in sport, connecting traditional administration with the changing interests and ambitions of younger participants.
His birthday is an occasion to celebrate that breadth of experience: a journey rooted in Mumbai, shaped by organisational discipline and broadened through public office and sport. As he enters another year, Shelar’s story continues across the institutions and communities that have defined his public life.
