As Kartik Sharma celebrated his birthday recently, the occasion offers an opportunity to recognise a career that has progressed alongside the transformation of India’s advertising and media industry.
With more than 25 years of experience, Sharma has built a reputation as a leader who combines strategic thinking with an instinctive understanding of people, brands and the changing media consumer. His professional journey has taken him through leading agencies such as Lintas, Mindshare, Madison Media, Maxus and Wavemaker.
During these years, he worked across diverse responsibilities and partnered with brands including Unilever, Netflix, Mondelez, L’Oréal, Vodafone and Tata Sky. These assignments helped shape his expertise across media planning, strategy, data, analytics and client leadership.
Sharma joined Omnicom Media Group India in 2020 after serving as CEO–South Asia at Wavemaker. Over the next several years, he led the network through a period marked by rapid digitalisation, changing consumer habits and growing demand for measurable business outcomes.
His responsibilities expanded significantly when he was appointed CEO of Omnicom Media India following the integration of Omnicom and IPG’s media businesses. The mandate placed him at the helm of one of the country’s largest media agency operations, bringing together capabilities spanning planning, buying, data, technology, content and commerce.
For Sharma, the modern media agency is no longer simply responsible for buying advertising inventory. He believes media planning has evolved into a wider marketing and business conversation, influencing decisions around growth, investment and consumer engagement.
In an interaction with exchange4media earlier this year, he underlined this shift by observing that media planning is “not a media question” alone, but increasingly a marketing question. His perspective reflects the changing expectations from agencies as clients seek integrated solutions and stronger links between marketing investments and business outcomes.
Amid the scale and complexity of his current mandate, Sharma has continued to emphasise collaboration and learning. On completing six years at Omnicom Media, he credited colleagues, clients and partners for contributing to his professional and personal growth.
That acknowledgement offers an insight into his approach to leadership. Even while navigating consolidation, technological disruption and intensifying competition, Sharma has remained focused on building teams, strengthening partnerships and creating an environment where talent can grow.
His contribution to the industry was recognised when he received the e4m Influencer of the Year 2025 honour, celebrating his transformational leadership and influence across India’s advertising and media ecosystem.
As he begins another year, Sharma finds himself leading at a defining moment for the industry. Artificial intelligence, connected television, commerce media and data-led decision-making are rapidly changing how agencies operate and create value. His task is to translate Omnicom Media’s scale into meaningful outcomes while bringing people, platforms and capabilities together.
Kartik Sharma’s journey is ultimately a story of steady evolution of learning from every assignment, adapting to every disruption and approaching leadership with both ambition and humility.
