Hema Viswanathan, a veteran in the field of social and development research, passed away today on February 20, 2025.

Viswanathan was known for her long-standing association with the Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB) where she was instrumental in starting the Social and Rural Research Institute (also known as SRI) in the early 1990s

Later, Viswanathan set up her own consultancy organisation, Barometer Research, which offers high-end research and advisory services to social and development clients all over the world.

She also worked with Bairds CMC on a range of research projects around the globe. She has had an illustrious career, helming quantitative research projects for policymakers, academics, donor agencies, and commercial organisations, to meet their objectives.

Among her most impactful works are the research on water and environmental sanitation in India, HIV vaccine utilisation policies, and a seven-year study for the Novartis Foundation for Developing Countries to assess behavioural change for the effective use of pesticides.

Vishwanathan has also taught market research at Mudra Institute of Communications Ahmedabad (MICA), Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad, and other prestigious institutions.

She is survived by her husband Vish, son Satyam, daughter Stuti and her grandchildren.
