In a major relief for popular podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, the Supreme Court has allowed him to resume The Ranveer Show after he provided an undertaking to maintain content standards aligned with moral and societal norms. The court acknowledged that his work sustains the livelihood of 280 employees, emphasizing the balance between creative freedom and ethical responsibility.
"There are multiple employees dependent on him, and their families' well-being is at stake. Subject to maintaining morality and decency, if he wants to run the show, we can allow it," the Bench, led by Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh, ruled.
The legal battle stemmed from remarks Ranveer Allahbadia made on comedian Samay Raina's YouTube show, India's Got Latent (IGL), which led to multiple FIRs and an ongoing probe by Maharashtra Cyber and Mumbai Police. His comments sparked a wave of backlash, prompting concerns over declining content quality in digital media.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, weighing in on the matter, remarked, "Humor is one thing, vulgarity is another, but perversity is a whole different level." The apex court reiterated that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it does not extend to unchecked obscenity.
The case also reignited debates around content regulation in the digital space. The court questioned whether digital creators believe they have an unrestricted right to use offensive language under the guise of free expression.
Earlier, Allahbadia had approached the Supreme Court, arguing that the ban on his show directly impacted the livelihood of his employees. The court’s decision reflects an attempt to balance creative liberties with the need to uphold ethical standards in public discourse.
With the Supreme Court’s conditional green light, The Ranveer Show is set to return, albeit under close scrutiny.
