Weeks after an e4m report about Karan Johar's Dharma Productions potentially seeking investors and reaching out to India’s top corporates, speculations are rife that Saregama, an RP Sanjiv Goenka group company, eyes to acquire the film production house.

On August 10, e4m was the first to report that Dharma Productions was looking for investors

While Dharma and Saregama both remained tight-lipped and repeated attempts to get their version didn’t yield any results, sources suggest that the music company seeks to acquire a majority stake in the esteemed production and distribution house.

The potential acquisition could be Saregama’s strategic move to diversify its portfolio and strengthen its foothold in the entertainment sector by acquiring a majority stake in Dharma.

Industry insiders indicate that Saregama’s interest stems from Dharma Productions’ established brand and rich history in Bollywood, as well as its recent ventures into various entertainment domains, including digital content and talent management. An acquisition could enable Saregama to leverage Dharma’s expertise and reputation, fostering synergies between music production and film to create innovative content that resonates with audiences.

Although the specifics regarding the stakes involved and the overall deal value remain unclear, this development signifies a potential strategic shift for Dharma Productions. Given the company’s influential role in Bollywood, any such transaction would undoubtedly garner significant attention.

“The value of the deal will likely hinge on the equity percentage being offered, Dharma Productions' current financial health, and its future growth trajectory,” insiders have noted.

These discussions come on the heels of a notable decline in Dharma Productions' profit after tax, which dropped to Rs 10.7 crore in FY23 from Rs 27.1 crore in FY22, according to financial data obtained from Tofler. However, the company reported a total revenue of Rs 1,044 crore for the fiscal year 2023, a substantial increase from Rs 278 crore the previous year. Additionally, borrowings decreased to Rs 82 crore in FY23 from Rs 92 crore in FY22.

Founded in 1976 by Karan Johar's late father, Yash Johar, Dharma Productions is one of India's leading film production houses, launching its legacy with the film Dostana, starring Amitabh Bachchan. Karan Johar took over the company in 2004, expanding its operations into various sectors, including advertising, talent management, content production, and live entertainment through initiatives like Dharma 2.0, Cornerstone Agency, Dharmatic Entertainment, and DharmaShow Live TV & Movies.
