According to estimates, about 11 lakh people in India are affected by cancer every year and patients undergoing chemotherapy also experience hair loss.

Such patients are often recommended to wear wigs to make them emotionally stronger. However, wigs made with natural hair are expensive and not affordable for most patients. Hence, as part of its effort to raise awareness on cancer care, Green Trends, the unisex hair salon from the house of CavinKare, launched Shair, a first-of-its-kind month-long hair donation-cum-awareness initiative, on World Cancer Day that was marked on February 4.

Deepak Praveen, COO, Green Trends, said: “No one knows better than us how important hair is, particularly for women. That's what we do, we touch about three lakh heads of women every year. Also, no one else has better access to hair than we do. So we are taking the responsibility of collecting hair and taking this cause forward. We saw this as a huge opportunity as haircuts is what we do day in, day out. That's our fundamental business and if we can make a difference to someone then we should. So, that’s why as an organisation, we decided to start this as our CSR activity.”

As part of this effort, starting today Green Trends’ Shair campaign will see a nation-wide hair donation drive at the over 375 Green Trends salons across India where the public can walk in and donate hair for free for one month. In the second phase, a hair donation event will be held in Chennai on March 1.

Commenting on the challenges faced, Praveen says, “While the awareness around hair donation is increasing, the biggest barrier that we face today is that not everybody is comfortable with donating hair. Hair is important to women and they don’t necessarily very easily part with it.”

Green Trends has also created a symbol to represent hair donation - a pink clip-on hair extension which will be given to every donor.
