Sony offers a slew of entertainment this weekend

This weekend, there’s entertainment galore on Sony Le PLEX HD and Sony PIX.

Straight Outta Compton is an intense and engaging story of how dissent and oppression gave birth to Hip-Hop music in the 80s. A biographical story of five young men who fought against racism with their brave lyrics and music, the movie premieres on Sony Le PLEX HD on January 15 at 1 pm and 9 pm.

Based on the true story of this famous American Hip-Hop group, Straight Outta Compton takes the viewer through the world of drugs, brotherhood, and West Coast Hip-Hop music. The film was a commercial and critical success making over USD 200 million against its USD 50 million budget. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film's soundtrack album featuring music by N.W.A debuted at no. 1 on the Rap Albums chart and reached no. 1 on the Top Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Starring O'Shea Jackson Jr. (who plays the role of his father Ice Cube), Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, and Paul Giamatti as N.W.A's manager Jerry Heller, the movie boasts of an  intriguing narrative and strong performances.

The film, based in an impoverished, oppressed Compton, California, during 1986, is the story of Eazy-E, a drug dealer; Dr. Dre, an aspiring disc jockey; and Ice Cube, a young rapper. Intrigued by Ice Cube's "reality raps" reflecting on the frequent systemic oppression that African-Americans encountered daily, Dr. Dre convinced Eazy-E to fund a start-up record label, Ruthless Records, with the former as record producer. When their song ‘Boyz-n-the-Hood’ got rejected by a New York rap group, Dr. Dre convinced Eazy-E to perform it instead. It became a local hit and Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella and MC Ren formed the group N.W.A (Niggaz Wit Attitudes), which revolutionized music in the 80s.

This weekend, viewers will also get transported to the land of pyramids and emperors as Sony PIX presents ‘The Mummy PIXathon’ featuring five films from The Mummy franchise (The Mummy Trilogy and its prequels The Scorpion King 1 and 2) on January 15, 2017, 9 am onwards.

The Mummy trilogy follows the story of an ancient Egyptian priest who is accidentally resurrected, bringing with him a powerful curse and the ensuing efforts of heroic archaeologists to stop him. A surprise hit, The Mummy went on to gross USD 416 million worldwide. Its box-office success led to the 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns, and seven years later, the third instalment titled The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The makers Steven Sommers, James Jacks, and Sean Daniel came back with The Scorpion King, a spin-off and a prequel to The Mummy Returns. This movie follows the story of Mathayus and his rise to become the Scorpion King, which continues in The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior.

Famous Hollywood actor Brendan Fraser who plays Richard "Rick" O'Connell, the protagonist in the trilogy, enthrals viewers with his action-packed performance. The Mummy series boasts of outstanding visual effects provided by Industrial Light & Magic who blended film and computer-generated imagery to create the titular Mummy. Not only did the franchise open to critical acclaim the world over, it went on to win the BMI Film Awards for Best Music twice and the Teen Choice Awards for Best Villain played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
