KKR co-owners Shah Rukh Khan is under the spotlight ever since Kolkata Knight Riders announced the inclusion of a Bangladeshi cricketer in their team.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has recruited fast bowler from Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman, for a price of Rs 9.20 crore in the IPL 2026 mini-auction, making it the highest purchase price achieved by a player from a Bangladeshi background. The player, Rahman, had earlier represented various teams in the IPL.
This particular decision, announced as a necessary part of team building ahead of the upcoming season, has already brought in a flurry of comments on social media platforms. However, it should be noted that this particular decision is in line with the long-existing format of the Indian Premier League, whereby teams select and acquire international players on the basis of certain criteria related to their performance and availability.
Ever since the commencement of the league, foreign players belonging to a diverse set of cricketing nations have become a regular feature of the league. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has maintained its standard position, indicating overseas players can take part in the IPL so long as there is no government directive to the contrary.
KKR’s latest recruit is a part of this larger trend of team compilation before the beginning of a new cricket season. Whereas a set of fans judged the team’s recruit based purely on its sports acumen, a section of the online community has raised objections over the selection of a Bangladeshi cricketer by the Kolkata Knight Riders, mainly on the basis of nationality.

Neither Shah Rukh Khan nor the KKR organization has made a statement on the social media reactions that have emerged on the issue. The matter continues to emphasize a trend seen in recent sports leagues and championships, especially those that feature celebrity owners. Celebrity owners become the hub of all the attention related to the league during a scrutinizing period, without necessarily participating actively in the organizational activities.
In a league that features both sports and entertainment, the owners feature prominently as well as the championship’s outcome and its aftermath.
