New York Times misnames NATO, issues correction notice

The New York Times has issued a clarification saying it will publish a corrected version after its Friday (3 April 2026) print edition mistakenly expanded NATO as the “North American Treaty Organization” in a headline. The article, covering US President Donald Trump’s threats to leave NATO amid the Iran war, should have used the correct full form, North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The mistake immediately caught readers’ attention, raising questions about how such an error appeared in a leading newspaper.

In response, NYTimes Communications confirmed that a correction will appear in the next day’s print edition. The statement clarified: “A correction will appear in tomorrow's print edition: ‘A headline with an article on Friday about President Trump’s threats to leave NATO misstated the full name of the body. It is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, not the North American Treaty Organization.’”
