Kerala Floods: The Hindu responds to the need of the hour

The newspaper on Aug 18 carried a note from the Editor on the front page, appealing readers to help flood-ravaged Kerala.

The Hindu newspaper on August 18 carried a note from the Editor on the front page, appealing to its readers to join hands in the task of raising funds for the victims of the Kerala floods.

The ad ‘We urge you to read this before anything else’, appealed each of the readers to come forward and contribute in any measure possible. With this, The Hindu has once again reiterated to be a publication that is committed to social good with the ad further stating, “No headline is more important. No story is as critical. Today the people of Kerala come first.”

Ads and editorials have and are being published, requesting both material and fund donations to The Hindu Relief Fund. All contributions will be made to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). A list of carefully curated non-perishable items was published with The Hindu's partner EFI to guide donors. To appreciate the efforts made by the readers, The Hindu’s website will acknowledge those that make a contribution of Rs 2,500 and above.

The response to the ads and editorials has been overwhelming, and donations are continuing to pour in, with several readers coming to The Hindu offices in person with cheques. The publication stated that it grateful to be able to help the people of Kerala and thanked the readers’ generosity during this difficult time.

Contributions may be made in rupees by crossed cheque or demand draft (payable in Chennai) drawn in favour of ‘The Hindu Relief Fund’. A covering letter should mention the name and postal address of the donor, with PAN (if available). A receipt will be issued. The envelope may be sent to: ‘The Hindu Relief Fund’, Kasturi Buildings, 859-860 Anna Salai, Chennai 600002.

Bank transfers, in rupees, may be made in favour of ‘The Hindu Relief Fund’, to Central Bank of India, Anna Salai branch, Chennai (826 Tarapore Towers, Anna Salai). IFSC: CBIN0280879. Current Account No. 3453685237. Those making bank transfers may send an email with the donor’s name and postal address with PAN (if available), along with the UTR number to A receipt will come by email.

Donations are eligible for exemption under Section 80-G of The Income Tax Act vide order: DIT (E) No: 2 (398)/ 2000-01, dated December 7, 2015.
