The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has signed a multi-year global partnership with YouTube that will make the platform the exclusive worldwide home of the Oscars beginning 2029.
Under the agreement, YouTube will hold exclusive global rights to the Oscars from the 101st ceremony in 2029 through 2033. The deal will allow the Oscars to be streamed live and free to over 2 billion users globally on YouTube, while YouTube TV subscribers in the United States will also have access to the ceremony.
In addition to the main awards broadcast, the partnership includes live red carpet coverage, behind-the-scenes access, Governors Ball content and other ancillary programming. YouTube will also support global accessibility through features such as closed captioning and audio tracks in multiple languages.
Beyond the Oscars ceremony, the collaboration will extend year-round access to Academy programming via the Oscars YouTube channel. This includes the Governors Awards, Oscars nominations announcements, the Nominees Luncheon, Student Academy Awards, Scientific and Technical Awards, filmmaker and Academy member interviews, film education initiatives, podcasts and more.
As part of the broader partnership, Google Arts & Culture will work with the Academy to provide digital access to select Academy Museum exhibitions and programs. The initiative will also help digitise components of the Academy Collection, which houses over 52 million film-related items, creating a global digital hub for cinema enthusiasts.
“We are thrilled to enter into a multifaceted global partnership with YouTube to be the future home of the Oscars and our year-round Academy programming,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor. “The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible — which will be beneficial for our Academy members and the film community. This collaboration will leverage YouTube’s vast reach and infuse the Oscars and other Academy programming with innovative opportunities for engagement while honoring our legacy. We will be able to celebrate cinema, inspire new generations of filmmakers and provide access to our film history on an unprecedented global scale.”
Commenting on the partnership, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said, “The Oscars are one of our essential cultural institutions, honoring excellence in storytelling and artistry. Partnering with the Academy to bring this celebration of art and entertainment to viewers all over the world will inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars’ storied legacy.”
The Academy’s domestic broadcast partnership with Disney ABC will continue through the 100th Oscars in 2028, while its international distribution agreement with Disney’s Buena Vista International will also remain in place until then.
