At the inaugural session of FICCI Frames 2016 in Mumbai, Reliance Industries Chairman, Mukesh Ambani addressed a session that included Uday Shankar, Chairman FICCI Media and Entertainment Committee and CEO, Star India, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Honourable Minister of Communications and Technology, Govt. Of India, Francis Gurry, Director General, WIPO, Ramesh Sippy, Co-Chairman, FICCI Media and Entertainment Committee and Bollywood actress Aditi Rao Hydari.
Ambani took the opportunity to introduce Reliance Jio’s plan and how it aims to revolutionise the Indian digital scenario. Speaking about the current situation of the media industry, he stated, “In 2004 the Indian entertainment and media industry was about $ 2 billion, since then in about 12 years this industry has grown 9 times to $18 billion. The Indian Media and Entertainment Industry will be a $100 billion industry in the coming decade. This industry has built a warm and emotional relationship forged through powerful story telling.”
Ambani feels that digitisation is the defining trend of this century and that is the very reason, reliance conceived Jio. He further added, “Jio is one of the largest transformational green field digital initiatives anywhere in the world. With an initial investment of over Rs 150,000 crore, it really is the world’s biggest start-up. The world is at the beginning of a digital revolution. Anything and everything that can go digital is going digital at an exponential rate, faster than you and I can imagine. Whether it is entertainment, commerce, healthcare or education, life is going digital.” Ambani believes that in the next 20 years human civilisation will collectively see more change and achieve more than what it has in the last 200 years.
According to Ambani survival will not be easy without the right tools for digitisation, “You will be destructed and out competed, you will be left behind, you will become irrelevant” he said. Speaking about digital growth in India Ambani added, “Today India is ranked 150th in the mobile internet access rankings out of 230 countries in the world. It is this opportunity to transform the lives of our 1.3 billion Indians that motivated Reliance to enter and transform the entire digital ecosystem and Jio is the result. I have no doubt that with the launch of Jio, India’s rank will go up from 150 to among the top 10 in the world in the next few years”
According to Ambani, Reliance Jio plans to achieve the target of making India digitally advanced in 4 phases. The first phase refers to coverage i.e. accessing mobile broadband no matter where you are in India. Currently the coverage of high speed broadband in India is only 15 per cent to 20 per cent. Jio will start its services with 70% coverage of the Indian population from the very first day. He feels India’s high speed mobile coverage will be over 90% by the end of 2017. The second phase refers to quality i.e. the speed and the strength of mobile broadband. The Jio mobile broadband will offer speeds that are 40 to 80 times faster than the current average speeds from the very first day of service. The third phase of Jio will be achieved through quantity and capacity of data available for every consumer in India. Currently the data consumption for an average Indian is .15 GB per annum, Jio’s network is engineered to provide a capacity of over 10 Gigabytes per user. Affordability is the fourth phase of the Jio growth plan, to which he said “All of this is no use if we cannot make it accessible and affordable to consumers and to all Indians in all parts of the country.”
As to what people can be expected from Jio, Ambani stated “Jio is not a telecom network but an entire ecosystem that allows Indians to live the digital life to the fullest. This eco system consists of devices, broadband networks, powerful applications and services distributed to every door step in India. Jio’s media offerings will include the most comprehensive libraries and programming of recorded and live music, sports, movies and events.
Ambani added,”Jio will unleash creativity and collective intelligence and it will do things in a smart, simple and secure way.” On making Jio a movement he said “Jio is about bringing people together it is about inspiring people to join a movement, the digital India movement. Jio is about you and your family, friends and community and all Indians together in a movement to embrace and win in the digital world.”For more updates, be socially connected with us on
